EMERGING VARIETAL WINES IN AUSTRALIA Most wine drinkers associate Australia with chardonnay and shiraz. A few, who know more, include grenache, mourvedre, and riesling. In reality for twenty years now Australian wine growers and have been planting south European varietals (mainly Italian and Spanish), and winemakers perfecting their techniques that have shown satisfactory, and in some cases outstanding results. I have tasted several such wines and can attest that their quality, value and taste profiles stand out. Excellent and Free Course on the Wines of the Rhone Valley offered by Napa Valley Wine Academy in conjunction with Inter-Rhone. Intermediate level done in 4 parts that does nice coverage of Cotes du Rhone AOC, CDR Named Villages, the Crus of the CDR and Other AOC's of the Rhone Valley. You are awarded a Certificate upon successful pass of the final exam at three stages. Good news is that you have unlimited attempts. Lots of info is covered, so its good that they broke it down into 4 sections. Great way to learn about this important region and a fantastic review even if you think you know it. Do you know how many CDR Villages are allowed to append their names? How many Crus North and South in the CDR? The difference between Cotes du Rhone and the Rhone Valley? Are wine trade fairs still worth the hype? I left Düsseldorf & Prowein last week with mixed feelings. My pros: + it’s a good opportunity to meet my customers. + it’s a great way to connect & catch up with people from the wine industry worldwide +be updated on the Latest trends: guess what, almost an entirely hall was devoted to zero alcohol wines & spirits ! My cons: -Expensive accommodation -Huge lines outside the show waiting for a cab or an Uber -strikes and canceled flights (second year in a row), with a lot of people trying to figure out how to get home… - How come that the 3 main wine trade shows in Europe are only few weeks apart (Wine Paris, Prowein and Vinitaly) ?! This goes at the cost of the wine industry and of wine makers in particular. Are they still the right place to make new customers? I doubt it and I think that there’s need for a change and for news ideas for the wine industry. Have you been to any trade show lately? Australia’s wine industry kept on growing in the 2000’s The Australian Geographical Indications Committee recognised ‘New England Australia’ as one of the 60 Australian wine regions under law in January 2008 so the name is now protected under Australian wine law The word ‘Australia’ distinguishes the name from the New England region in – for example - the United States or other countries The usual rules apply and wine producers of New England must use at least 85% fruit from that region for wine branded ‘New England Australia’ As well as the region it covers the towns of the area including Armidale, Glen Innes, Inverell and Tenterfield And it’s been growing strong every since with more than 15 wineries in the area

🍷 A Beginner’s Guide to En Primeur wines The practice of selling wine before it’s bottled, commonly known as en primeur or wine futures, is well established across many wine regions like Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Piedmont and Port. It’s in Bordeaux, however, where the en primeur system is of greatest importance in terms of volume, revenue and attention. Each spring, the region welcomes wine buyers and critics who taste barrel samples from the previous year’s vintage. Wine Stocks over Wine Production Ratios in Bordeaux, 1984-2023. In the mid 1980s, Bordeaux AOC wineries' red wine stocks were about 60% of Production (40% for white). However, the stock-over-production ratios have grown across the board, particularly for red wine. The 4-year moving avg for red Bordeaux has surged from about 1 in 2018 to more than 1.5 in 2023 -- suggesting the existence of a structural problem. https://lnkd.in/eRTcaFKT
