This week is National Volunteer Week! Our volunteering opportunities include being involved in workshops, providing one-on-one coaching and support to our trainees, helping with CV writing, preparing for interview, job boards & elevator pitch, working on the DFC buses and more. Here is what Sandra Agyepong, Resourcing Coordinator at Lexington, had to say about her time volunteering with us, “I really enjoy meeting new people and seeing the work they put into it for a new start in life. It is admirable to see so much resilience and commitment. When volunteering at the workshops, it seems less transactional or business-like as the students allow us to be a part of their journey that could hopefully lead to employment. As a recruiter, we most likely see the “finished product” if I may say, when there is so much more going on beforehand. I want to think that we manage to give the trainees a bit more self-confidence or reassurance by giving them some tricks for interviews. I also want them to understand that setbacks are not failures when you see the bigger picture, it’s a learning curve. They have so much more to offer than they think, what they went through makes them richer in life experience than most.” For further details or if you would like to get involved, please get in touch with volunteer@changeplease.org We want to thank everyone who continues to volunteer with us as without you we wouldn’t be able to offer some of the essential services our trainees need to get back into the world of work. Caught in action yesterday at Queen Mary University of London’s volunteering fair with Sabiha Khanam 📸 We spent the afternoon sharing the varied volunteering opportunities available with Poplar HARCA x WeAreSpotlight 💡 I’ve held stalls at more opportunity and careers fairs than I can count over the years, and was reflecting with Sabiha yesterday on what makes a successful stall. As you can see, we weren’t able to bring along the fancy banners and booklets on this occasion (one stall brought their own bunting 🤣) but we still managed to get interested student’s details down 🔥 Though they may be simple and obvious, these techniques are what I’ve found to work over the years: - Be present and attentive. I see so many outreach professionals taking ages setting up their elaborate stalls to just sit for three hours and stare at their laptop or phone hoping someone comes up to show interest. You need to be on the lookout, catching eyes and offering big smiles 😊 attendees often feel awkward or nervous, so it is important you are as welcoming as possible. I often stand in front of the table, instead of sitting behind it to start conversations. - Be curious. When you do engage an attendee, start the conversation by finding out their name, what their interests are and what they’re looking for. You can’t pitch to them effectively if you don’t understand their context. It also helps a more organic and memorable conversation to take place. - Pree the other stalls. It’s always worth seeing what other organisations set ups are like; you’ll get ideas for your own stall. It’s also important to speak to other orgs that are related to what you do. They can often become partners that will provide referrals. - Collect details and follow up promptly. If an attendee does show interest, be sure to collect their details. I prefer digital forms as it’s easier to manage, but you can get them to write on a piece of paper too (as long as you can read their handwriting!). You should then follow up ASAP (ideally within 24 hours) with all the details you want to share to encourage engagement. Those who do outreach work - what works for you❓❓❓

Three weeks ago, I reached out to the head of the ICT/Social Media Unit in my church to volunteer with the team. His first question was, "How would you manage this alongside your praise team commitments?" I assured him that I had already built capacity within my praise team, #delegating tasks and assigning leads during rehearsals, so that area was well-covered and not a problem. Over the weekend, I started my role with the ICT/Social Media Unit while maintaining my praise team commitments, and it was an incredible experience. I learned so much during the session, including the tools used for live #streaming on platforms like Facebook and YouTube—something I naively thought was just a matter of hitting the Facebook live button. It’s been a fascinating learning phase for me. Why am I sharing this? As a team leader, it's crucial to build capacity within your team so that your absence isn't felt. #Delegating tasks not only helps in developing your team members, especially those eager to grow, but it also allows you to explore other areas without fear of the team faltering. Don't center everything around yourself; assign tasks and empower your team. Additionally, if you're interested in building a #skill in a particular area, consider volunteering. For example, if you want hands-on experience in social media and your church has a relevant unit, start there. Take courses to enhance your skills and apply them in your volunteer role, then include the experience on your #CV. Volunteering can #sharpen your skills and expand your knowledge base, making you more confident and capable during job interviews. You have nothing to lose when you volunteer, take up intern role even if it comes with pay cut..The goal is to get the skills, knowledge and experience. You definitely have everything to gain if you go through this route in building the desire career you #envision At Transforming Your Career Vision, attendees who are job seekers would be opportuned to speak with a recruiter. The event promises to be an engaing and impactful session
