THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!

Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes. You can hold a position on your local HOA, PTA or on a committee at your church or synagogue. You can sit on a nonprofit board or chair a fundraiser. Many people have chosen to lead in the civic space of City, County and State government. They are elected school board members or have joined a municipal board or commission. Regardless of where you show up, you need to be familiar with all areas of community and civic engagement. As leaders we need to: 1. Understand how our City, County and State government works. 2. Be able to share where folks can get information on what is on November's ballot. 3. Help someone get connected to our local sources of civic engagement data like A2SI and CAN. Being a Passionate Advocate, Connected Neighbor, Educated Voter, Engaged and Trained Leader, are some of the topics we will be covering in Leadership Austin's Friday Civics program. The number one job of a nonprofit leader is to wake up every morning, point to the horizon, and let everybody on the team know where they’re headed and how they’ll get there. In other words, leaders are charged with casting vision and leading the mission. They're the chief visionary and the lead missionary. If he succeeds, the organization thrives. From resource sharing, to unmasking symptoms, to undoing ableist beliefs and advocating for accommodations, acceptance and access, to simply feeling seen, heard and loved—cultivating community is critical as someone who identifies as neurodivergent (“neurodiverse”). Here’s a tiny list of some online communities/ways to cultivate community and become informed: 1. ADHD: Join ADDA, CHADD, ACO 2. Autism: Join Autism Speaks, Autism Society, AACAP, Autism Self-Advocacy Network 3. General Mental Health: NAMI, Mental Health America 4. Local groups have meet-ups, share free and reduced cost services for legal matters, self-advocacy tools, advocating for education plans (IEPs and 504s), locating funding, conferences, and mental health or other support services.
