Over the last couple of weeks I have been interviewing candidates for a Sales Manager position and I have been approaching candidates that would like to progress their career and make the step up. So what is separating the genuine candidates from the rest. As a justification the majority of candidates say something on the lines of: 'Well I have been a frontline sales person for so many years I feel I am now ready to make the step-up' Now does the above really demonstrate that the candidate is going to be a good Sales Manager? It may demonstrate they are competent at their current role but does it show any leadership qualities? Other candidates have come up with far better examples when asked the same question. 'Part of my role now is to let new-starters shadow me in the field and I help them along with my manager for the first few months. I help them by sharing the objections I receive and how I overcome them. After they have done a number of calls with me. I then shadow them.' Or like another candidate I came across. 'I have been working with my manager over the last few months designing some new KPI's that we both feel the team will benefit from. I have been road testing these KPI's out the last few weeks and although some are good, others need tweaking. Along with my manager we have been showing the team the benefits of these and how to successfully implement them during the week'. Some candidates are already showing leadership qualities in their sales role that will put them front and centre with their current employer for promotion. If you sales role is not evolving and you are not driving that evolvement you will struggle to make that career jump.
