Morning coffee Reflections w/ Kelley ☕️ This is something I see all too often in dealerships: PROCESS DEVIATION & FAILURE This can be attributed to multiple reasons, but here is one common culprit: Employees do not understand the “why” and purpose of the process. Without understanding the purpose and value of a process, employees lack buy-in, leading to deviation or inaction. This causes (naming a few): - difficulty in accountability for the individual and management - culture disruption - skewed data Bring them in!! 👏👏 When employees are a part of the design process, and have a clear understanding of the benefits and objectives, they are more likely to have buy-in, and commit to it. You know, my favorite success stories are those where a company shows resilience when facing tough times. Spirit AeroSystems has completely won me over with how they've tackled adversity head-on. If you've been keeping an eye on the aerospace manufacturing scene over the past 10 months, you'd know it's been a bit of a rough patch for Spirit Aerosystems, grappling with quality issues in their supplied parts and a change in top leadership. And just when they thought it couldn't get any worse, the recent Alaska Airlines issue piled on even more challenges. The new management at Spirit has really stepped up to the plate, taking these problems head-on and actively working to improve things for both themselves and their customers. Here's a rundown of what they're doing: ✅ The top priority, echoed by their CEO and President, Pat Shanahan, is finding the right balance between human-assisted and automated technology. ✅ For Example, a significant portion of the 737 fuselage is built by factory workers. The front and back sections, being the most complex and confined workspaces, are areas where they aim to augment manual labor with automation. ✅ To stabilize Boeing's 737 production, the company has implemented buffer production days and stocked up on buffer parts. ✅ Spirit's production schedule currently enables them to manufacture 38 aircraft a month, while also testing their capacity to potentially produce up to 42 aircraft. One major shift underway at Spirit involves a transformation in company culture. The CEO emphasized the importance of this shift, highlighting the need for both the company and its workforce to become more customer-centric. In their case, it's about keeping the priorities of airplane companies at the forefront. I've been tracking Spirit’s progress during tough times, and it's setting a great example for the aerospace industry by swiftly embracing automation.

CULTURE EATS THE COMPANY FOR DINNER Never mind the Strategy and the breakfast, a bad Culture eats the whole company for dinner. That's what transpires from some reports like the article below about what is going on with Boeing's culture. As a result, Boeing slowly morphs into a case study like Nokia, where executives and managers were a world apart, or Kodak, where executive myopia was setting company's direction. In Boeing's case, turning a great engineering-led company, governed by an American version of the Genchi Genbutsu /* principle, into a company with remote-style non-engineering leadership at the helm seems to push the company beyond a point-of-no-return.
