Summer is coming to an end already and students are getting back to school. How can we help students who were or are in #FosterCare achieve their educational goals? Research from the University of Illinois's Judy Havlicek and Chapin Hall's Amy Dworsky and Elissa Gitlow shows students who are or were in foster care in Illinois are not well aware of supports available to them and that community colleges in the state have a hard time identifying these students. See the study and their recommendations for better supporting these students: https://lnkd.in/gAwbRVyi

💙 Why Archway Academy? Because here, education and recovery go hand in hand. 📚 Archway Academy offers a beacon of hope and support for high school students navigating the challenging journey of recovery from substance use disorder and mental health challenges. With nearly 1,000 high school students in Houston alone in treatment or recovery programs, Archway Academy's critical mission addresses a desperate need. The sobriety rate for teens returning to traditional schools post-treatment plummets to 20% within the first 90 days. 🚨 Why? Because traditional high schools lack the necessary support staff and accountability that Archway provides. 🙌 Our school is more than just a place to learn; it's a community where students are embraced at all stages of their recovery and educational journeys.

"Ohio has proven how successful full-service #CommunitySchools can be at improving academic achievement and student attendance,"- U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. Community Schools have seen similar success in #LA, #Baltimore, #Austin, #Chicago and #NYC. He is championing The Full-Service Community School Expansion Act of 2023, a bill that, if passed, would allocate $3.6 billion over five years to expand access to community schools serving low-income families. Youth Advocacy Foundation (YAF) CEO, Marlies Spanjaard, and EdLaw senior attorney, Elizabeth Levitan, along with Michaela Lauture from the Brockton Education Justice Alliance and J. Leon Smith from the Citizens for Juvenile Justice released an article in the Boston Globe yesterday discussing the need for genuine dialogue about school safety in Brockton, highlighting recent misrepresentations and scapegoating of students by school officials. The $14 million district shortfall has led to teacher layoffs and unfilled positions, creating challenges for students. Blaming students for systemic failures could exacerbate issues and push more students into the school-to-prison pipeline. The focus should be on support rather than punishment, with an emphasis on trauma-informed approaches and community involvement. The article calls for the implementation of models to address mental health needs and conflict resolution, stressing the importance of student voices in creating safe and supportive environments. Embracing developmentally appropriate approaches and adequate funding is essential for the well-being and success of students in Brockton and across Massachusetts. Preschool teachers are more likely to look for signs of challenging behavior in young Black children—especially young Black boys than young white boys (Gilliam et al., 2016). This sobering statistic underscores the critical work we do at the Midwest & Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP). Our mission of “Equitable, Responsive Education for All” propels us to address these disparities head-on. We guide our partners through the development of critical consciousness which empowers educators to examine their own implicit biases. As advocates for change, our dedicated team at MAP works diligently to provide technical assistance and training, promoting equity and reform. Together, we challenge biases and contribute to a more just educational landscape. Join us in our mission as we strive to eliminate disparities and create a nurturing space for every child to thrive. Let's work towards a future where every child is seen, heard, and given equal opportunities. #EquitableEducation #CriticalConsciousness #ImplicitBias #EducationReform #EquityInEducation #DiversityInEducation #InclusiveClassrooms #AntiBiasEducation #EducationAdvocacy #EqualOpportunities

If you haven't voted for our "panel" at SXSW EDU in March 2025, you have until THIS SUNDAY! Community votes make up 30% of total voting, so we need you! Seventy percent of youth in #fostercare aspire to attend #college, but only do so at less than half the rate of their same-age peers. Many who attend don’t complete their degree, often dropping out after the first year due to challenges related to their status. Campus-based #supportprograms can boost persistence, retention, and completion. Learn how to foster #highereducation success on your campus, and understand barriers, key program components, and how to improve access and success rates. We’ll cover policies that support older youth and how to pay for college debt-free. Let’s close the dream gap! SXSW EDU received over 1,400 submissions so your vote is very important and I'd greatly appreciate it! https://lnkd.in/e4QZ5VKP To vote: Go to website (above) Create a SXSW account (sorry about that) Cast your vote for the Closing the Dream Gap workshop by using the UP arrow button on the right-hand side of the screen "Get your sparkle ✨️ on and show the world 🌎 where you belong!" 💫🌟
