A Modern Tribute to Traditional Bahraini Architecture In 2009, I had the opportunity to work on Souk Al Arabia, a low-rise, mixed-use waterfront development in Budaiya, #Bahrain, while at #MSCEB. This project wasn’t just about designing spaces; it was about telling a story—one deeply rooted in Bahraini traditions while embracing modernity. The design, developed entirely in Revit, drew inspiration from the iconic Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai but stayed authentic to Bahrain’s cultural identity. The architectural language incorporated elements that have stood the test of time in the region: Wind Towers: Ingenious traditional cooling solutions reimagined for modern buildings. Mashrabiyas and Screens: A blend of privacy and aesthetics, offering shade and reducing heat gain. Pergolas and Parapets: Creating shaded, usable outdoor spaces while maintaining visual appeal. This was more than a design; it was a cultural reinterpretation, ensuring the development resonated with local heritage while standing out as a modern landmark. What Made Souk Al Arabia Unique? 1. Diverse Functions in Harmony: o Residential: Over 32,000 sq.m. of salable apartments, offering 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units. o Serviced Apartments: Almost 10,000 sq.m. tailored for flexibility. o Retail and Dining: 15,000 sq.m. of lively commercial spaces. o Boutique Hotel: 5,000 sq.m. of luxury accommodation. 2. An Accessible Waterfront: o The activated waterfront/boardwalk was designed as a shared space for residents and visitors, bringing life and vibrancy to the area. 3. First of Its Scale in Bahrain: o At approximately 140,000 sq.m., this project set a new benchmark for mixed-use developments in the country. Experiencing others take on real estate and area development facinates me. I’ve been strolling through different areas in Denmark, and their way of building is truly remarkable. Unlike the luxury apartment complexes you’d find in Dubai, there’s a different type of luxury here—one that has nothing to do with glitter and glamour, but everything to do with calmness and peace. Instead of piling up buildings like in New York and most cities, the Danish prefer to space things out.
