Cars and SUV’s can have an internal combustion engine defined as a supercharged compressor that intakes gas and forces more air into the engine. Producing more power for a given displacement that’s why a different size serpentine belt is under in the engines crankshaft. Turbocharged is powered by kinetic energy. In piston engines used in aircraft’s the supercharge is used to compensate for lower air density at high altitudes. Turbocharged reduces fuel consumption and increases power output.

(𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟏/𝟑) There are three primary types of ways that an internal combustion engine can produce power. ✔️The most common is a naturally aspirated engine. ✔️The second most common is a turbocharged engine. ✔️And finally the third way is a supercharged engine. What is a supercharger and how does it work? A supercharger is an air compressor that increases the pressure of air supplied to an internal combustion engine. This aids in higher power output as the engine gets more oxygen in each of its intake cycles and helps it burn more fuel. ⚙️ Mechanical Superchargers Mechanical superchargers are the most common types of superchargers. The three most common types of superchargers in automotive applications are the Roots, Lysholm twin-screw, and centrifugal. 🔺 A Roots-style supercharger utilizes 2 lobes that mesh together with air being compressed in pockets between the lobes. In some applications, three lobes can be used to compress the air. This is the same type of supercharger that is found on the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR1. 🔺 A Lysholm twin-screw supercharger is a positive displacement supercharger (just like the Root style) and it utilizes two close-tolerance screws to compress air. These are similar to worm gears. 🔺 A centrifugal supercharger looks similar to the compressor side of a turbocharger and that’s because it essentially is that. The war on diesel fuel ⛽️ consumption ______________________________________ The cost of diesel fuel seems to only be going 📈 Reducing fuel consumption is an easy way to your reduce operating cost But not only is it better for your wallet it’s better for the environment. Win-Win. I talk a lot about transitioning to alternative fuels and the electrification of our fleet However, it’s no secret that diesel powered heavy equipment will still be around for many years to come. Yes CARB, that’s the reality. But is it time to transition away from the traditional mechanical powertrain? Is a torque converter really an efficient way to transfer engine power to the axle groups? Most manufacturers are recognizing this and are building hybrid (diesel/electric) or hydrostatic versions of their existing heavy equipment like wheel loaders and track dozers.
