Best in class example 👇 Really love the way Trainline sent me a tongue-in-cheek notification yesterday mimicking Spotify’s ‘2023 Wrapped’. Except the ‘Year In Trains’ recognises the positive impact I made by making more sustainable travel choices in 2023. What’s good: - Puts CO2 emissions into context = 2 years not running a washing machine 😎 - The tone of voice was lighthearted and self-deprecating. Sustainability doesn’t have to be so goddam earnest. - Recognising and reinforcing the behaviours we want to see more of (train journeys > car journeys). Let’s call it: Sustainability is not the leading driver of people’s travel choices. Price and Performance (reliability) dominate. #DemandSwitching recognises this and seeks to build no-compromise ‘No Co’ solutions for the post-carbon economy. The UK’s Daily Mail leapt on this and suggested Trainline should report on the year’s delays and cancelled trains instead: “'How ironic Trainline Wrapped dropped late': Rail passengers share hilarious memes of their 'year in trains' revealing their most visited stations - but not how many journeys were cancelled!” But NB Trainline doesn’t control the train operating companies. Achieving ‘modal shift’ as it’s known, is no small challenge. But… Undoubtedly a combination of behavioural prompts, emotional and financial rewards, price incentives and a government prepared to back the shift to trains is the only way to go. According to CleanTechnica, the UK government subsidised the Airline industry to the tune of £7bn in 2021… you do the maths 🤢 Congratulations to Natalie Marques Laura Sinclair and all at Trainline. Great to see #behaviouralprinciples applied here. In this visualization Trainline uses tangible comparisons (vs only abstract numbers), uses anchoring and relativity and bases the invitation to join on social imitation.

Convenience in mobility often depends on one crucial factor: waiting time. My golden rule is 3 minutes, with 7 minutes being the limit. But isn't "convenience" about more than just waiting time and punctuality? Certainly, these are very important aspects, but they are not enough – and here I speak from both my professional and personal experience of recent years – to determine why people prefer private cars over public transport. As a user, it is also about having easy access to all the information and offerings I need. After all, that means I don't have to worry about uncertainties and can expect a smooth experience without wasting my time by planning its use wisely. If I could redefine and expand the concept of convenience in the context of the future of mobility, it would be less about having coffee delivered to my seat and more about staying flexible in case something changes on my way. A reliable and state-of-the-art digital solution would not only be cost-effective, but also intelligent enough to make the best recommendations. It wouldn't require technical expertise, so it would be fun for the users. And finally, it would ensure that nothing is forgotten and time is saved as an innovative platform seamlessly orchestrates and optimizes the entire experience. Users need a comprehensive and reliable interplay of providers that offers the best access to a wide range of services. Common data standards and a modern, intuitive user experience are key. In a word, convenience in mobility means: effortless. Anytime. #Convenience #FutureOfMobility #Effortless

🚗 Change is happening in UK mobility!
