It is no surprise that I am a big proponent of the values and benefits of amateur sport - including the mental and physical health benefits, the development of skills including team play and resiliency, along with the terrific way sport builds communities and connections. In BC, quality, safe, and inclusive amateur sport experiences are delivered by viaSport Designated Sport organizations. These 72 provincial organizations have met minimum standards through a comprehensive evaluation review designed to promote accountability, integrity, and transparency to its members, athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers, sponsors and the general public. This evaluation includes a review of strategies and polices around governance, coaching & officiating, participation, and athlete development — all supported by volunteer Board of Directors. As you contemplate summer sport programming, or looking at options for the fall, please consider programs offered by these organizations. They are achieving the highest standards in quality and safety. Go here to learn more about these 72 organizations.

Mom, accountant, and inspired leader with a background in a variety of service industries. Current book recommendation: Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara
This is such a great opportunity for young sports officials to actually enjoy the job and stay in the game! Having been a field sup for 7 years, plus watching my father and brother officiate together for over a decade, I know how hard they have it. Coaches forget they’re parents, and parents forget they’re not coaches. (It’s ok to be one, the other, or neither!) Most importantly, treating our officials poorly teaches the kids we’re sporting with that foul language (no pun intended) and hateful commentary are acceptable during a tense or unsuccessful moment. When we treat our officials well and let them lead, the kids get more out of the game and learn how to treat others. Keep kids in sports (and music!), let the officials do their jobs, and let the game be a game. It means more to them than you know!
