Civil TAP is a civil trial advocacy program and an integral part of LACBA's Trial Advocacy Project ("TAP Program"), which has won awards from the American Bar Association and provided exceptional trial training for thousands of attorneys since its inception in 1978. ⚖️ 👩⚖️📚️ Civil TAP provides a unique combination of lectures, demonstrations, and a mock trial. This program is open to any attorney at any experience level. As one alumni of the program said, "If you have never tried a case, this is the place to learn how to do so. If you have tried dozens of cases, this is the place to push your trial performance to a whole new level." 💼 Civil TAP is taught online, via Zoom conference, using a “virtual” courtroom. Bar Associations/Law Societies throughout Asia have concentrated on attempting to support their members who have the capacity to realise their pro bono ethical obligations to work pro bono with varying degrees of success. It is both a key member service and public benefit undertaking. The varying degrees of success in these efforts highlight the complex landscape of pro bono legal work across different jurisdictions, each with its unique challenges and opportunities. Building upon this foundation, the workshop has become a cornerstone of the annual Asia Access to Justice Exchange (A2JX), gaining momentum and support from a network of key bar association/law society members both from within Asia and the global legal community. By institutionalising this workshop as a core initiative, we harness the synergy of past participants and workshops, aiming to spotlight not only the steadfast efforts of Bar Associations/Law Society in pro bono advocacy but also the dynamic strategies that bridge the gap between those in need of pro bono legal services and the legal professionals eager to provide them. This year’s workshop, occurring on the 11th of November 2024 in Bangkok and virtually, seeks to further this legacy, offering a platform to showcase ongoing and new best practices in pro bono support, fostering a collaborative environment where impactful strategies are shared, refined, and implemented. The Hon Justice Peter Applegarth of the Supreme Court of Queensland writes – Judges love to see brilliance. But we want assistance. Well-prepared junior barristers often try to impress me in the first few minutes by telling me all the details of the case and showing that they have read lots of cases. Feel free to impress me with your knowledge and tell me the details. Just don’t do it in the first two minutes. At the start I simply want to know who did what to who; what the issue is; what the rule is; and why you say you should win. Do not start with a lot of dates and detail that I cannot absorb. Try not to start: “This is an application under section 38(b)(v) of the Dog Act”. First tell me: “The defendant’s dog bit a child”. I don’t need to know the dog’s name or the child’s name at that point.
