Yes, I've published a new article! I wrote a neutral text to post about it, but the AI-editor thinks I rather should phrase it this way: "Check out this fascinating article about the psychophysical benefits of woodcarving from an insider perspective. The author shares their personal experience of turning to craft during their battle with terminal cancer. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dh6KgFrs. #woodcarving #crafttherapy #psychophysicalwellbeing #terminalcancer #insiderperspective "

How can the total number of deaths from something be going up while the rate of that cause of death is going down? Answer: When the rate of population growth outpaces the rate of death from a cause - cancer in this case. Reporting only the number of cancer deaths while not noting the concomitant, and more robust, rise in total population is, frankly, irresponsible, leading to erroneous conclusions - even dangerous conspiracy theories. It is the responsibility of healthcare providers to communicate to the public properly. This was not done in the case below, unfortunately. It for all intense and purposes made the American Cancer Society look like it was stating a conclusion different than the ACS actually has because cancer death RATES have actually DECREASED - eg down 27% from 1991 (215 per 100,000 people) vs 2016 (156 per 100,000 people). Yes, absolute number of cancer deaths (numerator) in the US increased from 514,684 in 1991 to 598,038 in 2016. That is a partial truth. But the total population (denominator) concomitantly went from 254M to 331M. See the “fuzzy math” being used in the post below? So actually, trends show some progress against cancer death rates. See the graph in the comment section plotting total deaths/yr versus annual cancer death rates. This is what the ACS actually says: “…2024 report, released in January 2024, states that cancer mortality in the US has continued to decline, resulting in over 4 million fewer deaths since 1991.” Before we go on, let that fact sink in. Four MILLION less lives lost at 2016 rate versus 1991 rate. But that’s also be balanced and round out the picture, ACS continues: “However, the incidence (meaning number of new cases per 100,000 people) of some common cancers is increasing….The decline in the death rate is largely due to fewer people smoking as well as improvements in ways we prevent, find, and treat cancer have also lowered the death rate.” So - with a more sober, complete picture…Am I satisfied with the current rate? Of course not. Do I think we could dramatically cut back on CRRAHP (calorie rich, refined and highly processed) foods and beverages that drive a calorie overload cancer risk. Absolutely. Do I think we could be more physically active to reduce cancer risk? Absolutely again. Do I think we could cut back further on smoking, or pull back the pandemic driven increased in alcohol intake, reduce HPV and radiation exposure (etc) to reduce cancer risk even more. Certainly! But please, healthcare communicators, be fully honest and complete. Cancer death RATES have gone down. Whether one intends or not, we can untowardly scare people when data is reported improperly or manipulated to make things look worse than they are. Goes in the opposite direction as well. Manipulating data to make things look better than they really are is just as inappropriate. Not “sexy“ to not be extreme, but it’s still the right thing to do. Do the right thing, please.
