Everton Football Club's new stadium has catalysed more than £650m of accelerated regeneration within Liverpool Waters and the Ten Streets developments. In a recent interview with our Director of Development, Chris Capes discussed how Bramley Moore Dock has already played a key part in Liverpool City Region's economic recovery post-pandemic and helped drive the city centre and regeneration efforts further north. “We came when there was nothing here and it was just the open dock, so to see the stadium now is absolutely phenomenal. When we've been out and consulted and done a lot of engagement with the people who live around here, they're really keen to see access to the site, to the waterfront, and see facilities that they can use, whether it's parks, open space, doctors, dentists, things like that, retail and other opportunities. “It [Liverpool Waters] is a big site, stretching about two and a half kilometres down to the Royal Liver Building, so there's an opportunity to deliver all sorts of different types of regeneration and it will be publicly accessible, all open to the public to use." My 25th season as a Grimsby Town Football Club supporter! Not something I’d ever thought I would have on my CV as a hobby when I was growing up in Belfast! I’m now a season ticket holder and have many friends and family here. Life can present curveballs, taking us in directions we never expected. With Grimsby Town I’ve experienced the pain of relegation and play off final defeats, and the joy of promotions and cup wins (especially the League Cup win against Liverpool in 2001!) This experience reminds me of the career transitions many of us go through. We often start with one path in mind, only to discover new opportunities that lead us elsewhere. I still live in Belfast, but just in the same way I found a 2nd home in Grimsby, the choices we make in our careers can open doors we never imagined. Embracing these unexpected turns can lead to personal growth, new connections, and exciting possibilities. Whether it’s a new industry, role, or location, each decision shapes our journey and can lead to greater fulfillment. As with football, the key is to stay open to change and be ready to seize the opportunities that come our way. Success breeds success, or does it? As an Ipswich Town supporter the hard times have finally been made worth while with two successive promotions from league 1 to the Premiership, fair to say beyond my wildest dreams. The downside of that success is others assuming they can piggyback for free and asset strip you and assume they can easily replicate what you have achieved for themselves. The past week the media appear to have taken delight in sharing stories that our manager will be leaving for "bigger" clubs to progress his career. He may or may do that, but my warning is Ipswich Town's success is a result of far more than one person, be they the manger or not. Football is a great example where a successful and up and coming manger has left for a bigger club to find that club fails them and ultimately halts or ends their career. If you stop and think about the clubs looking to recruit a manager based on their past performance are likely to be those who's infrastructure is not what it needs to be. So Kieran McKenna, leave if you wish, but don't take fore granted your new employer will be as supportive as the one you just abandoned. Dick Fosbury and the most successful flop of all times What a privilege to be in Paris during these phenomenal #JOPARIS2024! While attending an athletics event in the #StadedeFrance, I reflect on the legacy of #DickFosbury (1947-2023) and his gold medal in the high jump in Mexico 1968 Olympic games. Fosbury pioneered a revolutionary technique of high jump that allowed him to win the gold medal and that was totally different from the prevalent straddle technique of that time. At start, it was ironically called “the Fosbury flop” looking at the way he landed on his back, but it was all but a flop! Over time, most athletes adopted and improved his technique that is since then prevalent in the high jump. For that reason, #DickFosbury is considered one of the most influential athletes of all times. What I find amazing is how he developed this revolutionary technique during his college years: he found lots of coaches advising him to jump “the orthodox way” and focusing on teaching him the straddle technique. He kept practising both ways, until the day that results made clear that he performed better using his own style. His coach Berny Wagner gave up trying to correct him and began helping him to refine his technique. The path to the Olympic gold medal was cleared and the biggest revolution in high jump had just started.
