With growing antibiotic resistance, many health systems, particularly in low– and middle-income countries, do not have reliable access to effective antibiotics. SECURE is expanding sustainable access to antibiotics: https://lnkd.in/ed2hTj2y

As microorganisms adapt to survive life-saving drugs, we face a future where common infections could become untreatable. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) isn’t just a medical issue - it’s a global challenge touching health, agriculture, and economies. The solution lies in collective action: responsible use of antibiotics, robust research, and stronger systems to prevent resistance from spreading. Every step we take today protects tomorrow’s health. Let’s work together to preserve the effectiveness of these vital medicines. #AMR #WorldAntimicrobialAwarenessWeek #HealthForAll #EducateAdvocateAct #WAAW2024

Heard on Day 1 and Day 2 of the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress, there is always a need for a pipeline of antibiotics as resistance to antibiotics will always come. If we know the lifetime of an #antibiotic medication is limited as bacteria will always evolve and develop #resistance, why isn’t there a greater financial incentive for the development of new antibiotics? Shouldn’t the low shelf life mean limited #Supply? While the need (#Demand) grow as population and #AMR risk grows? #WorldAMRCongress #DiseasePreventionSummit #antimicrobialresistance #antimicrobial

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global health threat, with bacteria increasingly evolving to withstand common treatments. According to a recent article, resistance rates have surged from 16% in 2001 to 44% in 2020, leading to an alarming number of infections that are no longer treatable with traditional antibiotics. This issue directly contributes to 1.3 million deaths annually. Addressing this requires significant attention, including better drug stewardship and investment in alternative treatments. #antibiotic, #antibioticresistance, #health, #crisis, #lifescience

New WHO Guidance on Antibiotic Pollution. Antibiotic pollution is a growing concern that could undermine the effectiveness of life-saving medicines globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first-ever guidance on wastewater and solid waste management for antibiotic manufacturing. This is a significant step forward in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which threatens to make infections more difficult to treat. As someone deeply interested in precision medicine and drug resistance, I recognize the importance of this guidance. Controlling pollution from antibiotic production not only preserves the efficacy of antibiotics but also protects our global health. The environmental impact of antibiotic manufacturing is a critical but often overlooked factor in the spread of AMR. The guidance provides human health-based targets to mitigate risks and promotes transparency, allowing buyers, investors, and the public to make informed decisions. It’s encouraging to see that this initiative was developed with input from a wide range of experts and stakeholders, highlighting the collective responsibility we all share in combating AMR. Let’s work together to ensure that these medicines remain effective for everyone. #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #WHO #DrugResistance #PrecisionMedicine #SustainableHealthcare https://lnkd.in/dNCtimhk

Antibiotic resistance: a global crisis and problems Drug-resistant infections occur when pathogens change in ways that render antimicrobial drugs ineffective. As a result, the pathogens survive and continue to spread. When infections are treatable with antimicrobials, people can be cured and further spread within the population can be readily contained. This has saved hundreds of millions of lives since wide use of these “miracle drugs” started over 70 years ago. Loss of drug-effectiveness because of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasing in both developing and developed countries. If this trend continues unchecked, the world will confront a reality where many infectious diseases have “no cure and no vaccine.” cited from https://lnkd.in/gYj6JPsT AMR is a serious issue that requires immediate attention and an urgent remedy. However, the development of new technologies, such as engineered toxin–intein antimicrobials that can selectively target and kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria in mixed populations, offers new hope for the creation of more effective treatment regimens. Just my two cents. #AMR #Educate #Advocate #ActNow #Viroxy #ViCare
