As April is National Volunteer Month, let me take this opportunity to encourage you to learn about America Needs You, an organization I’ve been involved with for 11 years now. I began my with ANY when it was still called New York Needs You in 2013. Shouts to Carlos Cuevas for getting me involved! I got involved at the urging Carlos, who was a Mentor Coach at the time, when he shared his positive experiences with the program. Once I learned about ANY’s mission and who it was serving, I didn’t need more details or convincing. Since then, I’ve been a mentor 4 times and have collectively served on the Associate Board for 2 years. “I keep coming back for the bagels,” is what I’d tell most people, but it hides a much more serious truth – school alone will not help our youth succeed, America needs mentors who help the marginalized and share the “secrets” to breaking out of cycles of poverty. ANY’s curriculum is highly structured and they have an extremely easy-to-follow program that includes topics like managing up, personal finances, mock interviews and public speaking skills. And what does ANY want from you? Show up on time, that’s it! Being a Mentor Coach with ANY has helped me become a better friend; a more effective employee; has given me the tools and strategies to be an influential manager; and it’s given me access to organizational leadership practices that inform how I show up as a leader in different spaces. It's always difficult to hear about colleagues and friends struggling at work, a situation that seems increasingly common, especially in the education sector. Teachers face growing pressures to perform while managing numerous tasks at work, even before considering their personal lives. To provide the best education for our children, educators need to be in a positive place both mentally and physically. They must feel supported by their colleagues and valued by their leadership. Many teachers inherently take on extra responsibilities because they genuinely want to help others. However, leaders must recognise that goodwill has its limits. The staff members who go the extra mile set the standard for their peers and encourage others to step up. While prioritising children's needs in decision-making in schools is crucial, what if staff well-being was also at the heart of leadership decisions? Wouldn't staff reciprocate by focusing more on pupil well-being and doing what is best for them? In a rapidly changing world, businesses and communication are evolving quickly, yet schools often lag behind. When I joined Danes Hill, I was disillusioned and uncertain about continuing my teaching career. A year later, I've rediscovered my love for education and am able to pursue my passion for supporting staff well-being. Fortunately, our leadership values open discussions and genuinely listens to staff. It's an exciting time to be part of this school, and I eagerly look forward to starting my second year in September.

I struggled with shyness during my childhood, which started in primary school and continued through junior high. I often kept my opinions to myself and hesitated to speak up in class, fearing ridicule from my classmates. This impacted my academics, preventing me from getting into my first-choice senior high school, while most of my peers did. Realizing the effects of my shyness motivated me to become more confident in the senior high school I had. I engaged in class discussions, contributed when necessary, and took up leadership roles. Ultimately, I see my second-choice school as a blessing that helped me uncover my true potential. There are a few things I would like you to have in mind 🔆 Overcome your fears 🔆 Timidity can limit your opportunity 🔆 Contributing to discussion in class enhances learning and builds confidence 🔆 Adapting to challenges will cultivate a strong sense of self-determination 🔆 Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth Sometimes, unexpected circumstances can lead to positive outcomes and self-discovery. 𝗕𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲: Spend time in classrooms and teacher lounges, not just your office. Show your teachers that you're invested in understanding their daily realities. 𝟮. 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆: When teachers come to you with concerns, give them your full attention. Ask questions, paraphrase their thoughts, and show empathy before jumping into problem-solving mode. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆: Share your vision, goals, and decision-making processes openly with your staff. Invite their input and feedback regularly. 𝟰. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵: If you make a promise or commitment, do everything in your power to keep it. Consistency is key for building trust. 𝟱. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Recognize and celebrate your teachers' wins, both big and small. Publicly acknowledge their hard work and dedication. We used The Six Types of Working Genius model to help our team be more productive, communicate more efficiently, and problem-solve more effectively. Are You Letting Your Past or Privilege Hold You Back? As an educator, I’ve seen it all: parents who believe it’s solely the teacher’s responsibility to push their children, and others who say, “You’re asking for more than my child can give.” The reality is that sometimes the issue is not about what the child can do; it’s about what the parents believe their child can’t do. They can’t see the potential, so they don’t push for it. On the flip side, I’ve also seen those with every privilege available to them, starting organizations, leading initiatives, and yet crumbling inside. But they won’t admit it, not even to their board members, out of fear of looking like failures. They say people like me are “too honest.” This is the same challenge we’re facing in public schools today. There’s a fear of accountability. People don’t want to share the reality of their school’s performance or admit where things are falling short. And so, we hear the same excuses: “People aren’t showing up.” “No one’s doing the work.” But here’s the harsh truth: If we’re not focusing on the work we’re supposed to be doing, we’re failing. Whether it’s in the classroom, in leadership, or in life, we can’t keep dodging responsibility! Why? Fear our past, our privilege, or the fear of being held accountable! We must be willing to show up, face the truth, and do the work… no matter how uncomfortable it might be. So I ask you: Are you letting your past, privilege, or fear of accountability hold you back? It’s time to step up and take responsibility for the success we want to see.
