I have put together a few bullet points of what me and some of my clients have been speaking about when recruiting Accountants into their team: ➡️ Seek industry experience where possible - looking for candidates with previous experience in the insurance industry or a strong understanding of insurance accounting principles will mean that the candidate will likely be familiar with industry-specific regulations and practices. ➡️ Analytical skills – insurance accounting often involves complex financial analysis and forecasting, looking for candidates with strong analytical skills who can interpret financial data and identify industry trends will significantly impact the chances of the candidate hitting the ground running. ➡️ Technical proficiency – look at a candidate’s proficiency with accounting software and tools commonly used in the insurance industry such as SAP, Oracle Financials, or insurance-specific software like Guidewire. Additionally, look at their knowledge of relevant accounting standards, such as GAAP and IFRS. ➡️ Culture fit - insurance Accountants often work closely with other departments, so it's essential to assess how well they will integrate into your team and fit with your company's mission and objectives. ➡️ Ensure the compensation and benefits are competitive – as you can imagine Insurance Accountants with specialised skillsets and industry experience are in high demand. To ensure you attract the top talent make sure you are offering a competitive compensation package, this doesn’t only mean the base salary and bonus offered but also opportunities for career advancement and professional development.
