Vice President Of Operations with 15 years of success in all aspects of the solar energy project cycle.
Can you guess how many solar installers are hiring for entry-level sales positions in our area? Solar salespeople should not be unleashed on the public in this manner. We are not talking about a deck, cabinets, or flooring. Okay, your panels look good and passed local inspection. It is time to make the final payment. If it were a deck or countertops, you would be in good shape. Solar energy is different. Will you get the ROI you had hoped for? Maybe. It will take at least a year before you know. Did your salesperson account for the trees in your yard when they generated your proposal? Solar energy is about KwH production. A few trees can easily bring the production down by 40%. That reduction affects utility savings (net metering) and SREC II income. Did they show you a solar access analysis? Some houses with no trees can lose access from higher roofs, casting shadows onto lower roof panels. Did your installer put the wattage panel on the roof that they specified? Yes, it is a thing. Supply chain issues have made it more difficult for installers to get the product they thought they had access to. From the contract signing date to the installation date, it can take 2–3 months to get all the approvals. Panel availability can be an issue. Some township electrical inspectors are now requiring us to show them the panel before we install it. Was your salesperson able to explain the federal income tax credit? Did they explain that if you do not pay federal income tax, you may not be able to use a credit? It is not a refund. Some salespeople in New Jersey are telling retired folks that it is a 30% refund. That is incorrect, and they will be sad to hear at tax time that they will have difficulty recouping that money. Always speak with your accountant. Do not let these new solar salespeople try to explain a large home improvement that takes years to fully grasp. Most of them will be selling siding or windows in the near future. Get references from people who have had their panels for years. They might know if they got what they were supposed

There’s a difference between “selling solar” and implementing residential solar systems. And it isn’t until companies prioritize and reward the latter that we will actually be recognized as the responsible, customer-centric industry we are. Here’s what I mean (and if you’re in solar, I know you’ve seen this too). Too often, solar sales reps go to houses and… • Race to get the deal • Prioritize commission • Don’t work hand-in-hand with engineers to get an accurate scope When they really need to… • Educate the consumer • Focus on getting the right scope and plans vs. racing to receive a payoff • Guide the customer through until installation Now, there are many reps that focus on doing the second. They are who we look to hire and who will ultimately make a career (not just a quick buck) in this promising new technology. But as we’ve seen all too often, it only takes a few bad actors to sully a field. As an industry, we can and should do better. What do you think? #sustainabilityviasolarpower #PoweringASolarFuture #solarindustry #cleanenergy #solarmovement #sustainability
