I'm pleased to share that I recently attended the online conference "𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞 & 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 (𝐋𝐒𝐇𝐓𝐌)" that was based on the Centre on Climate Change & Planetary Health (CCCPH) series. LSHTM typically focuses on several key outcomes related to climate change and planetary health: 1. The diverse program will include sessions on the health impacts of environmental change and solutions that benefit both people and the planet to create a more healthy, sustainable, and equitable world. 2. Climate in Health Policies: Recommendations to include climate action in health policies, focusing on making healthcare systems more climate-resilient. 3. Collaboration Across Sectors: Calls for teamwork among the health, environment, and energy sectors to tackle climate and health issues together. 4. Top Research Needs: Identifying urgent research areas like climate-related health inequalities and emerging disease risks. 5. Focus on Vulnerable Communities: Commitment to prioritize support for low-income countries most affected by climate change. 6. Ambitious policies are urgently needed to safeguard human health from the mounting impacts of the Earth crisis. But how do we ensure these policies are developed and acted upon? One critical pathway is through effective communication with policymakers. A recent review of 139 studies has revealed key strategies to improve this dialogue. Key recommendations include: • Tailoring messages to the needs and preferences of policymakers • Using health professionals as messengers • Sharing accessible, concise, and timely evidence • Building coalitions and trusted relationships to amplify impact These insights are especially crucial as we navigate the intersection of climate change and public health. Effective communication can drive evidence-based decision-making and foster the collaboration necessary for transformative change. Yet, more research is needed, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, to tailor strategies that work in diverse contexts. For those advocating for Planetary Health, these findings emphasize the importance of clear, collaborative, and evidence-driven messaging. Yesterday we launched our research on integrating climate and health policies in the UK, based on interviews with 42 experts across government, healthcare, academia, and civil society. Our research revealed: ➡️ Integration is crucial: Climate change and health policy must work hand-in-hand, with systems-thinking approaches prioritising prevention, public health, and vulnerable communities. ➡️ Practical policy integration in the UK remains limited despite widespread recognition of the need for this to be done better. ➡️ Siloed decision-making and resource constraints are the main barriers to better integrating climate and health policies. ➡️ The scale of the NHS offers major opportunities for change through its £170 billion purchasing power. ➡️ Co-benefits are key: actions like reducing air pollution and improving housing quality can deliver wins for both health and climate. ➡️ Leadership exists: Wales and Scotland are pioneering innovative approaches like the Well-being of Future Generations Act. 💡 Insights from our speakers included: - Healthcare’s global carbon footprint is twice that of aviation, highlighting the urgency to decarbonise. - Prevention is 4x more powerful than hospital care for improving health and cutting emissions. - Simple switches can have big impacts: For example, switching to low-carbon inhalers could significantly reduce emissions across the UK’s 6.6 million inhaler users.
