What is Legionella? Legionella is a group of pathogenic bacteria that can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a serious and potentially fatal pneumonic respiratory illness. Where is Legionella found? Legionella bacteria are found in natural surface water and groundwater systems. They are also present in building water piping and can proliferate within these systems under the right conditions. Possible sources of Legionella bacteria include heating water systems, drinking fountains, showers, sink faucets, humidifiers, decorative water features and cooling towers. The bacteria grows naturally in the water that supplies these systems, and conditions such as warm temperatures, stagnation and the presence of nutrients can lead to rapid growth. Cooling towers used for heat rejection in human-occupied buildings are considered a major risk point for waterborne pathogens due to the large volumes of water that they can evaporate. Is it preventable? The bacteria can only infect a person who aspirates (inhales) contaminated water droplets. Fortunately for us humans, this means that Legionnaires’ disease is preventable in the vast majority of cases, as long as we take the correct course of action to protect the public from exposure to contaminated water. It's essential to have a comprehensive strategy for minimizing legionella risks in cooling towers to ensure a healthier building environment. 🌬️🦠 Legionella Risk in AEROSOLS 🦠🌬️ Understanding the risk of Legionella bacteria in aerosols is crucial, especially in environments where water systems generate mist or spray. A - Aerosol Production: Devices like humidifiers, cooling towers, and showers produce aerosols, which can spread Legionella bacteria through tiny water droplets that can be inhaled. Regular maintenance and disinfection of these devices are essential to minimise risk. E - Education about Legionella: Educating staff and users about the risks of Legionella and the importance of maintaining and monitoring water systems is vital. Awareness and proper training are key to preventing outbreaks. R - Routine Cleaning: Implement a routine cleaning schedule for all water systems and components that produce aerosols. This includes descaling showerheads, cleaning cooling towers, and disinfecting humidifiers to prevent biofilm formation. O - Optimal Temperature Control: Legionella grows best in water temperatures between 20-45°C (68-113°F). Ensure water systems maintain temperatures outside this range to inhibit bacterial growth. S - Stagnation Prevention: Prevent water stagnation in pipes and tanks, as stagnant water can promote Legionella growth. Regularly flush out infrequently used water systems. O - Ongoing Monitoring: Conduct regular environmental monitoring to check for the presence of Legionella in water systems. Tools like Hydrosense PRO offer rapid onsite testing, allowing for immediate detection and action. L - Lessen Litigation Risk: Implementing comprehensive Legionella control programs and adhering to safety guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of outbreaks and subsequent litigation. Proper documentation of maintenance and monitoring activities is crucial. Everyone loves a splash about or the soothing noise of a fountain display, what they won't love is the aftereffect of breathing in Legionella-contaminated aerosols. https://bit.ly/4eq7kiQ #LegionellaAwareness #AerosolSafety #LegionnairesDisease #WaterSafety #HydrosensePRO #PublicHealth

Legionella bacteria pose hidden dangers in your water system, potentially causing Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. A Legionella Risk Assessment is essential to determine if your water storage areas harbor these bacteria. This assessment is a detailed, dated report that highlights high-risk areas and checks if you’ve taken necessary measures to reduce bacterial growth. Although not a legal requirement in the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) strongly encourages all businesses to conduct these assessments for safety. Regular reviews are crucial, especially after changes in the water system or building usage. By proactively identifying and addressing potential risks, you protect both your property and health. Have you conducted a Legionella risk assessment on your property recently? Share your experiences or concerns in the comments below. #WaterSafety #PublicHealth https://lnkd.in/eZiDj3Wu
