The City of Olathe is committed not only to recruiting and retaining top-tier talent, but also to fostering the growth of future leaders. Future leaders like Zoe Johnson. Zoe hails from Ada, a city in northwest Minnesota. Her ultimate goal is to become a City Manager.   After speaking with Zoe for even a moment, it's clear that this young woman is going to achieve big things. She exudes a passion for public service, a desire to learn, and a strong sense of self.   Growing up, Zoe had always known that she wanted to help people in some capacity, envisioning a career in the medical field. So began her college days on the pre-med route, but she quickly figured out that life as a doctor wasn't going to be a fit. This revelation threw steadfast, confident Zoe for a loop, as she continued on an "undecided" path where she was questioning which direction she should go next.   That was until a visit from her grandpa changed the course of her life…   "My Grandpa had volunteered to help with the election processes around the county I lived in and offered to let me tagalong. It was just one lengthy day in public service - and I loved every moment of it," Zoe recalled. "In the first city we went to, there was a City Manager who really impacted me. The environment was very hectic, but she knew exactly where everything was, what role everyone needed to play, and kept it all under control. I want to be like her. Someone who has such a good grip on things of this nature; things that are truly affecting people - much more than they even realize most of the time!"   It wasn't until this day that Zoe really connected what her Grandpa had done for his career with what it actually meant. But as a former City Administrator with decades of knowledge, he was just the person to help her find her true calling.   "He has always been very honest with me, telling me that it's going to be a hard career. But he's there to talk with me about anything I want to learn and gives advice anytime I ask for it," Zoe shared. "He's why I started looking for roles in city government while I was still in undergrad. He said I needed to get some experiences so that I'm sure this is what I want to do since I'd only 'hit the books’ so far. It was very good advice. In fact, he's the reason, in the end, I took the internship opportunity in Olathe."   Part 1 of 3

Quindaro Boulevard is a central corridor in Northeast Kansas City, Kansas (KCK). It embodies a significant chapter in the struggle for freedom and equality in American history, while also representing the ongoing challenges and efforts to build strong, vibrant communities in historically marginalized areas. FUSE Executive Fellow DeWayne Bright, Sr. is supporting the revitalization efforts of Quindaro Boulevard. In partnership with the City, FUSE, and Medici Road, Bright brought together local stakeholders in an Innovation Lab to discuss a strategy for this central corridor in the historic Northeast KCK. Revitalizing Quindaro Boulevard is important for several key reasons: 1. Economic development: The boulevard and surrounding areas have faced decades of economic decline. Revitalization can bring new businesses, jobs, and economic opportunities to the community. 2. Community pride: Many residents and entrepreneurs with deep roots in the area are working to restore Quindaro Boulevard to its former vibrancy. This fosters a sense of community pride and ownership. 3. Correcting past injustices: Discriminatory practices like redlining and blockbusting negatively impacted the area around Quindaro Boulevard. Revitalization efforts can help address some of these historical injustices. 4. Cultural preservation: The boulevard reflects the rich history of African American settlement and Native American history. Revitalization efforts can honor and showcase these intertwined histories. By investing in the revitalization of Quindaro Boulevard, the community can bridge its past and present, creating a more vibrant and prosperous future while honoring its rich and complex history.

Without safe and accessible public transportation, so many like Ryan wouldn’t have the same opportunities.
