Utrecht, the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands, is renowned for its medieval architecture in the city center and picturesque tree-lined canals. However, its transformation over time is evident as we are now busy creating a vast concrete jungle. This change is highlighted in a before-and-after picture posted on Reddit, titled 'Utrecht’s Renaissance: Restoring the Historic Moat and Removing the Old Highway for a Transformed Cityscape. 1980s vs 2020s.' The juxtaposition reveals the city's evolution from its past to the present. #environment #earth #sustainability #life #globalchallenges

SMART & LIVEABLE CITIES skystudio Architecture perceive urbanism as a catalyst that prompts individuals to embrace a distinct—more sustainable, more communal, more livable—future. We advocate for the significance of urban density in curbing the land-intensive expansion of cities globally. From our perspective, urbanism encapsulates everything.

The Elegant Brutality of the City Atrium. As the world’s population continues to rise, the solution lies in building upwards. Our concept represents the potential of vertical urbanism, where cities evolve vertically to accommodate growing populations without compromising on openness, green spaces, and community needs. Neo-brutalism finds its elegance in the unadorned and the raw. The city atrium becomes a focal point of this architectural expression, where the stark beauty of exposed concrete is complemented by life, creating a magical and welcoming space. #verticalurbanism #neobrutalism #futurecities #urbanretreat #sustainablearchitecture #smartbuilding #urbaninnovation #greenurbanism #highrisefuture #ecoarchitecture #urbanrefuge #brutalistdesign #architecturalharmony #citysanctuary #futurevisions #ianfulgar #futurism #atrium

#neglectedmodernism #cincinnati The appreciation for these more modern background buildings is an important topic in preservation today. They go against the norm of what we typically cherish, but now are begging for our attention. Urbanism benefits from a diversity of building typologies represented over time. They imbue a sense of the history of a place regardless of whether one agrees with the particular aesthetic or not. That’s the richness of #cities. And, of #citybuilding.

#Europan #E17 Special Mention in Barcelona (ES) -- Cookbook for an Urban living Room -- by AS: Adrián Haro (ES) – architect and building engineer "Cookbook for an Urban living Room, as the name itself, advocates the use of multiple small actions that together allow us to change current urban realities. Neighborhood interaction is encouraged in more natural environments, establishing public space as a meeting point for both human and natural life." #europan17 #livingcities2 #architecturecompetition #urbanplanning #urbanism #landscape #competition #architecturaldrawings #archilovers #axonometrics #barcelona #españa

RECOVERING THE URBAN IDENTITY The Mosul Old City’s ancient architecture, with its labyrinthine alleys and timeworn structures, transports us across epochs. Each stone whispers tales of dynasties, traders, and artisans who once thrived here. By preserving these architectural marvels, we honor Mosul’s collective heritage. Imagine the Old City as a living chronicle—a scroll unrolled through time. It has witnessed empires rise and fall, yet its stones endure. The Tigris riverfront, too, bears witness to humanity’s ebb and flow. By safeguarding these sites, we ensure that our past remains vividly etched in the present. Before the war, the riverfront was a bustling hub—a place where laughter mingled with the river’s gentle murmur. Families strolled along its banks, artists sketched its contours, and friendships blossomed. Rebuilding isn’t just about bricks; it’s about rekindling community bonds, where neighbors become storytellers and memories intertwine. Investing in restoration isn’t a mere transaction—it’s an investment in our collective soul. The Old City and the Tigris Riverfront can be reborn as vibrant spaces. Cafes may bloom anew, parks may echo with children’s laughter, and artists may find solace by the water’s edge. This urban renaissance bridges past and future, weaving resilience into the city’s fabric. Moreover, the revival of these areas can attract cultural tourism, fostering economic growth and cross-cultural exchange. Imagine tourists exploring the ancient alleys, savoring local cuisine, and engaging with artisans—each interaction breathing life into history. Let us not merely rebuild; let us reimagine and breathe vitality into the very heart of Mosul city. photo: https://lnkd.in/djPgsvmg

London, Paris, New York—these are the three most commonly admired cities, and many of us aspire to move there. But why? Firstly because, each of these cities has a distinct identity in our minds. And they are urban places that feel like large villages, blending the charm and character of a small town with the perks of a big city. And the best part is that they have a historic yet contemporary vibe, making us feel like part of a continuum rather than cities that have abandoned their historic roots. Which means, the architects really knew what they were doing. They knew that each building they create adds to the fabric of the city and therefore it needs to be in unison with the others, but also have enough edge to stand out on its down. They were planning well ahead of their time because buildings don't cease to exist when we do; they go on for long periods of time, especially if they have the quality, charm, and flexibility to be repurposed as needed. These cities owe a load of gratitude to the architects of the early and mid-1900s for shaping these cities into what they are today. The way classical buildings make us feel is so profound that all of modern or post-modernist architecture combined doesn't even come close. I'm not trying to influence your thinking. You can see and decide for yourself. 🤷♀️ After all, seeing is believing. #classicalarchitecture #architects #newyork #London #Paris
