If you thought Spanish is the only language spoken in Spain, then you have thought it wrong. 4 languages in Spain have "co-official status" with Spanish: Catalan, Basque, Galician and Aranese, each of which is the main language in its region. Three other tongues are "recognised" languages: Aragonese, Catalan (in Aragón), and Leonese (also called Asturian and Babel). "Recognised" means the regions can take certain measures to protect their languages- the languages do not need to be declared official. An unspecified number of lesser languages, including Astur-Leonese, Eonavian, Fala, Ruffian, Berber and Caló, have no official status and are not even recognised. Some of these languages, particularly Catalan and Galician, are widely spoken. Catalan is spoken by some 10 million Spaniards, or about 21 percent of the population. Galician has roughly 3 million speakers. Basque has 660,000 speakers, or a quarter of all residents in the Basque country. But even though Basque is not as widely used as the other two languages, it is doing much better than any other regional languages in Spain. The next one after it on the list is Leonese, with about 35000 speakers. All of the main languages even have their own academy, and the government of Catalonia has successfully applied Quebec- inspired language laws to protect Catalan. September 26 is the European Day of Languages. There are between 6,000 and 7,000 languages in the world-spoken by 7 billion people in 189 independent states. Over half the world's population, moreover, is bilingual or plurilingual. There are about 225 indigenous languages in Europe - roughly 3% of the world’s total. German is the most-spoken mother tongue in Europe. About 16% of the European population speaks German as a first language. Globally, German is the 11th most-spoken language, with around 90 million native speakers. 56 % of Europe’s population is proficient in more than one language. In London alone, about 300 languages are spoken.
