An MLV Exclusive On-the-Record Q&A with Gert Bos, CSO at QServe Group
Last week, I caught up with Gert Bos, PhD, FRAPS, between sessions at the Qserve Group's MedTech Conference in Amsterdam.
After filling me in on the Kick-Off Session, I had many questions for him.
To start with, I wanted to hear what he had to say about IVDR and the projected loss of IVDs from the market.
Q: Some have projected a potential loss of as many as 8,000 out of 27-28,000 IVDs.
✅ When asked about the current status, Gert Bos responded, “Well, in certain ways, for medical devices, we have so many competitors… But in IVDs, switching from one to the other is going to be much more difficult.”
Q: Probing deeper, I asked if the projected loss of IVDs is still a genuine concern.
✅ According to Gert, “Talking about numbers, positive and negative, of course, nobody really knows if this losing 8,000 was realistic. That is one of the reasons why the Commission is now pushing for this survey.”
Q: Can we expect less profitable IVD products to be phased out?
✅ The economic viability of keeping certain diagnostic products in the market has come under scrutiny. Gert highlighted this challenge by saying, “One is still the unknown for many of the manufacturers… a lot of products ultimately will be phased out, but nobody's telling because as soon as you say you will phase out, you'd lose your existing client base.”
Q: How will this impact the Hospital Exemption and in-house Tests?
✅ In situations where there's a lack of available tests, hospitals may resort to their own solutions. Gert raised a pertinent question: “Is this really an improvement or is this just a pity due to the, you could say, the paperwork?”
Beyond IVDR, he talked about a number of other hot #MedTechtrends he sees that I compiled into a helpful flipbook below.
