CAT will return to normal operations and administrative offices will reopen to the public starting Monday, January 27. Currently, a modified service for the Savannah Belles Ferry is in operation. Riders are encouraged to stay alert and mindful of their surroundings, as some bus stops may still be impacted by snow and ice.

The City of Stirling is at at a Nexus with its upcoming Council and Resources committee this Tuesday where they will consider whether to support the Hector St safe active street project. Should be an interesting discussion! There will be impacts for the City’s active transport strategies in the future one way or the other. Check out the interim report evaluating the current operation of 4 km of the Moorland St safe active street which runs from Odin Road to West Coast Highway Scarborough. I’m staggered as to how much misunderstanding there is in the general community from well educated stakeholders of how safe active streets generally operate in allowing slow each way moving traffic in a 30 Kph zone - I think it’s more to do with fear of change and what as a community we are willing to compromise and live with for the greater good in terms of road safety and the activation of other transport modes. As a community, changes like this don’t happen overnight as can be seen in many examples from around Australia and the rest of the world.

In public administration there’s two things that often intersect - politics and policy. It’s way more complicated than this… but some days demonstrate why it really isn’t. Today we saw a pretty good policy announcment - the Victorian Government’s new 50 activity centres earmarked for housing development near train stations etc. It’s not going to solve the issue in its entirety but it’s a step along the journey and also a plank of what needs to be a broader policy platform on housing. Today we also saw some pretty bad politics - 100 or so NIMBY’s turned up to the announcement of the above policy to protest. Reporting says this was coordinated by the local liberal MP for Brighton (who also happened to be an aspirant to lead the divided party, ironically these aspirations helped hold off last week’s potential challenges to Pesutto). All this stunt succeeded in doing was to frame the Premier as fighting for all Victorians to tackle the housing crisis, and her opponents are some grumpy people from [checks notes] Brighton. This isn’t anything against the good people of Brighton, or any greivances they may have with the policy. It’s about the optics that their local member has created. A comparatively wealthy suburb having punters shouting “shame premier” for trying to address a housing crisis. Politics is about differentiantion and the fights you’ll have on the issues you value. The member for Brighton has framed the Premier as fighting for every punter across most electorates in this state who is impacted by the housing crisis against the rich NIMBY’s from some elite postcodes. Entirely of his own doing. 🤷♂️
“I love this. Someone is finally doing something about housing where I want to live.” One Gen Z-er texted me this morning on today’s big announcement from the Allan Government. 25 new activity centres (& 25 more to come) at train stations announced today for fast tracked & more affordable housing! Keep your eye out for an Hawker Britton Group Pty Ltd occasional paper that will detail this critical policy announcment.

A Question for all my letting agent connections - how much notice do you need to give your landlord if you were in one year fixed term and it just rolled on for the next six years? *There’s nothing in the tenancy agreement! I’m sure it used to be two months notice, but everything online says one month. #lettingagent #lettingadvice #help

I spent the better half of this year writing these toolkits and it was such an honor and privilege to work with, and learn from, tenants and tenant advocates who were willing to share their expertise, lived experience, and invaluable insight - which, together, all helped to shape the material presented in the tools below. Two things are true: first, tenant protections are not just important tools to keep renters stably housed, but they are critical in leveling the playing field against arbitrary, discriminatory, and retaliatory threats to housing stability over the long-term. Second, tenant protections don’t *work* unless tenants are at the forefront. You can read all four toolkits, which highlight just cause eviction laws, rent stabilization, code enforcement procedures and habitability standards, and laws that limit excessive rental fees, below.
Our State and Local Innovation (SLI) project released today a set of toolkits highlighting four key tenant protections: just cause eviction laws, rent stabilization policies, code enforcement procedures and habitability standards, and measures limiting rental junk fees. Each toolkit overviews a major tenant protection, details its common components, summarizes state and local examples of the protection, and highlights complementary policies. https://lnkd.in/eZkNxyZf
