The election of Donald J. Trump in 2024 has the potential to influence APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) trade dynamics, particularly given his focus on renegotiating trade deals and prioritizing American economic interests. Trump’s previous term saw a move toward bilateral trade agreements and a cautious approach to multilateral trade agreements, so his new administration might similarly advocate for U.S.-focused policies, potentially affecting existing APEC trade relationships. APEC members might anticipate shifts in tariffs, supply chains, or trade policies, especially with a renewed focus on protecting domestic industries. Countries within APEC could seek adjustments in trade approaches with the U.S., which may lead to modified trade strategies or new negotiations to align with the Trump administration’s policies.

We recently organized an engaging session on 'Geopolitics & the State of Trade' at KPMG's Lakehouse. We extend our gratitude to Zack Cooper from Armitage International for delivering a comprehensive analysis of the current trade landscape. Specifically, during the session, we explored various administrations' perspectives on trade policy and potential day 1 actions. A few key takeaways included: •Trump Administration: Potential for increased tariffs on China, immediate tariff measures on Europe, and efforts to bolster the USMCA agreement. •Harris Administration: Continue tough, targeted measures on China, unlikely to turn attention onto Europe, criticism of the USMCA, and pursuit of new trade agreements with Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific. The session offered valuable insights into how these policies could impact businesses and the broader trade environment. Stay tuned for more for more insights! Countries frequently enter into international agreements and memberships in organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) or regional trade blocs. While these agreements can provide economic benefits, they often come with strict regulations that limit a country's policy options. For instance, commitments to free trade can restrict a government's ability to impose tariffs or subsidies that protect local industries. The trade-off between gaining economic advantages and losing sovereignty is a critical consideration for policymakers

We had a short and (bitter)sweet discussion on the role of media in public perception and reporting on economy and trade. We scratched the surface on responsible reporting, inclusive trade, transparency, reliability, accuracy, tariffs and other trade tools. Thanks to the East-West Center for setting the stage for APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Secretariat’s Michael Chapnick and Policy Support Unit’s Carlos Kuriyama, Amb Charles Jose, BusinessMirror’s Cai Ordinario and I to have this timely conversation given the the challenges of misinformation, false reporting and populism.
