As Summer internship season begins soon, I’ve been receiving questions from students around what they should do if they weren’t able to secure an internship in time. First, let me say I’ve been in your shoes. My sophomore year of college, it wasn’t until the last day of the Spring semester that I ultimately was able to secure an internship. I had been rejected time after time from roles I applied to and honestly thought I would be spending my Summer without gaining any internship experience. So for those who are currently in the same shoes I was in, here are my suggestions: 1️⃣ Contact offices on your campus to see if they need coverage during the Summer months When students go home, offices on college campuses remain open. Oftentimes they’ll need individuals to continue the work of the students who were working during the semester. This is an opportunity to not only get work experience, but to build connections with your university’s faculty and staff. Offices I would look into are the office of admissions, student affairs, career services, financial aid, and dining. 2️⃣ Leverage small businesses in your community Local businesses often need assistance doing administrative tasks or revamping some part of their business model. As a fresh set of eyes you may be able to offer a business what they’ve been looking for. Think of places that you frequent in the community, could you be a value add to that business? 3️⃣ Spend time working on a passion project or doing volunteer work Whether you’re working on a business idea you’ve been thinking about or volunteering to teach children in your community, these actions produce skills that are transferable. Use these opportunities to expand your knowledge base while adding something new and different to your resume. I did this back in 2020 by starting my own small business and it was always a conversation starter when people looked at my resume! 4️⃣ Participate in conferences or immersion programs While this won’t necessarily get you work experience, attending conferences can expand your network and ultimately put you in contact with individuals who could potentially help you secure an internship in the future. Things like Google’s BOLD Immersion Program (https://lnkd.in/e5PeN-JE ) provide students with exposure to industry knowledge and future internship opportunities. ——————————————————————— What are some other things you would recommend to students who are still looking for Summer internships? What have you done in the past that has made a difference? #tipswithtaylor #summerinterns #internships #collegestudents #university

In case you are working with a teen who still doesn't have much structure to their summer, consider helping them to find a job! As Mary Banks of Quad Education Group shared in her Entrepreneur Media post, there are many benefits to employment as a high school student including: - Acceleration of skill development, - Resume/Application building, and - Financial empowerment. More from Mary can be found at: https://entm.ag/t84xyJ As adults, we often put pressure on high school student to focus on getting good grades and completing academic requirements so that they can get a diploma, go off to college, rinse, and repeat. However, there is a big difference between having the skills to be a successful student (a learner) and the skills needed to be successful in employment (a worker). Summer employment is a great way to begin building transferable skills that are needed to manage being a worker such as communication, negotiation, taking a leading or supporting role on a team, accountability, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. It is also a great way to start testing out what preferences you have for the type of environment, tasks, and people that you want to work in and with in adulthood. #SummerJobs #HighSchoolEmployment #TeenJobs #SkillDevelopment #TransitionPlanning #YouthEmployment #CareerReadiness

🎓 Advice for High School Students: Stand Out Beyond Grades 🎓 I have stayed connected with my old High School by participating in their career days. I’ve had the privilege of speaking with many high school students about their future paths. One recurring theme is the stress over finding summer internships. Recently, a student who had an internship offer rescinded asked me for advice. Here’s my take: I don’t believe high school students need internships. Instead, focus on jobs that pay you and teach you valuable skills. Here’s why: 💡 Real-World Skills: Jobs like working in a restaurant, lifeguarding, or being a camp counselor teach responsibility, teamwork, and customer service. I personally worked for an electrician and a countertop company in high school. The skills I learned were invaluable when I owned my home and provided unique talking points in interviews. 🔧 Respect for Hard Work: These jobs instill a respect for the effort and dedication required in the workforce. They teach you the value of a hard day’s work, something that sets you apart. 🌟 Unique Experiences: Instead of an internship that may come from parental connections, start your own venture. A lawnmowing, powerwashing, or driveway sealing business teaches sales, customer service, and product quality—lessons that are far more impactful than most high school internships. Internships can be valuable, but often for high school students, they don’t offer the depth of experience or the chance to truly differentiate oneself. Don’t stress over not having an internship. Find a job where you can learn and grow, or start your own small business. The summer is about to start—make the most of it! Stand out by being unique, dedicated, and ready to learn from every opportunity. These experiences will shape your future more than any title on a resume. #HighSchoolAdvice #CareerDevelopment #RealWorldSkills #SummerJobs #BostonLatinSchool #FutureLeaders #StandOut

I'm starting to see the calls for summer interns. A marketing/social media intern is there to LEARN MARKETING...not to set up your entire marketing plan because you don't have the budget to pay someone to do it. If you can't teach them marketing, don't take a marketing intern. I find this to be a really big issue with small businesses who think "Oh we can have the intern do our marketing/social media and we won't have to pay them!" Get that outdated and wrong mentality out of here! As someone who went through 3 unpaid internships in my college career, I also want to iterate on the importance of PAYING interns. I was fortunate enough that I had parents who could help financially support me during these unpaid internships or that I was able to hold a job during that time. That is not the situation for most people. Most people take out loans, in addition to student loans, to survive during college and support themselves during unpaid internships. If your intern is doing work, you should be paying them. College credit isn't going to put gas in their cars for a commute or keep them fed when working at your business. Pay your interns, don't take advantage of them, and remember what you went through as an intern.

Business idea if anyone wants to run with it: Marketplace that matches college students with small businesses for internships or part time experience. Why? 95% of college students are NOT selected for competitive internships at Fortune500 companies. But all students need real-world experience. 95% of small businesses don't have access to college students. But they need help. And would happily take on 1-2 interns per semester. Hyper-target small businesses awareness within a 10-mile radius from the college campus. Perfect for in-person internships. Target alumni networks from each college to build awareness about college students looking for internship experience. Emotional tie-in with alumni wanting to support their alma mater. Only small businesses (less than $10M in rev) can join. No big logos. Start at one college. Prove the model. Then scale to more college towns. Give access to the 95% of students not interning at Fortune500s. Give access to small businesses to support the local economy. Revenue model? -Modest monthly subscription fee for small businesses -Free access for students -Potential Ad revenue targeting GenZ once it scales I'm not a techie, but happy to help if someone wants to build this.
