There's not much more I can add on to Ken's post below, as he has highlighted and articulated everything I would have (but I'm going to anyway). Really, CV's for hospitality roles are nearing outdated. So much that goes into these types of roles are personality, skill, patience, the willingness to learn and adaptability. I really resonated with the ending part of the Westminster Works article that discusses the use of 30 second videos. If it takes that length of time to make an impression when someone walks into an interview, why not just start there? That being said, we work incredibly hard with those that come through our programme to build their CV's, practice interview questions, set up mock interviews and discuss all the cogs that turn in the wheels of employability as we understand that new processes just aren't quite there yet. Breaking barriers in employability and hiring processes can be difficult, but we need people to listen to WHY and the REASON we feel so passionately about moving away from more traditional routes. I really recommend just taking 2 minutes of your time to read the article & see what you think. So many amazing candidates are out there (without being biased to our fantastic trainees & graduates) with a WEALTH of what is needed for so many roles, but they are being held back by not being able to get in-front of the right people. ***RE-THINKING HOSPITALITY RECRUITMENT*** This report by Westminster Works & published in Public Sector Catering has really, really resonated with our teams at Change Please. Our teams work intensely with the wonderful trainees we support to help to get them job ready, they work on barista/hospitality skills as well as building confidence and interpersonal skills, support with CVs and mock interview workshops. Yet, in many cases, when it comes to the hiring decision, a lack of experience and that trainees history in work (or lack of) can be a major barrier ... it's not about whether they are capable, willing and able to do the job. CVs, experience and qualifications matter for many roles however if we want to bring capable people into the workforce, particularly from marginalised groups, we have to consider better and more pragmatic ways to recruit. Where Change Please gets the most success in Onward Employment we have a joined up process - bringing work experience & trial into the recruitment process - allowing hiring managers to meet the candidate and allow the candidate to understand the employer. Statistics revealed that over half of employees said they are open to leaving their place of work in the next six months, and one in five are unlikely to recommend their place of work to a friend or family member. The 11th Edition of “What we do at Beyond Hospitality” since inception in 2009 – Headhunting 😊 Most likely the least ‘glamorous’ part of our business is Executive Recruitment or ‘Headhunting’ as it is usually referred to. Over the years, we worked with all the top hotel companies (Four Seasons, Peninsula, Mandarin Oriental, Viceroy, Rosewood, Patina Hotels, Raffles, Emaar, Jumeirah, Hotels, One&Only to name a few). At some point (about 10years ago), this was becoming almost a full-time commitment, we then reduced the focus on searches for our hotel and F&B projects Theoretically, it is a great gig for both parties because you are filling a top-job with incredible professionals and we help to grow the career for some of the industries best. But in many aspects, it is also a rather thankless job: If you are ‘stuck with HR’ or ‘Corporate Recruitment’, one is treated in the best case as a commodity or supplier, right up there with the insurance salesman and considered entirely exchangeable. Professionals with great background get contact from headhunters very frequently and unless one knows them personally, even the courtesy of a reply or call-back is not standard. Thus here is a plea on behalf of all the people helping with recruitment: if you hire a professional to help you fill a position or if someone reaches out to you and asks you if you are interested in an opportunity, treat them with the same professionalism you treat a guest – he or she spends a lot of time, energy, relationships and experience on helping both sides (and yes, if things work out it is well compensated, but for every candidate presented, on average 40-50 are contacted and talked-to and for every successful search that lead to a placement there are several that don’t work out for various reasons).
