Though I was impacted by yet another #ITlayoff, I am happy to share that I have started contributing to a great organization called Itergy that focusses on the IT security and managed services space. One thing that I have learned in the past year is that company culture plays a key role in employee happiness, retention and company reputation. Key markers for company culture include onboarding, transparency, internal politics (or lack there of) and offboarding. Off-boarding, is especially hard to track. It would be interesting to have a tool/forum that focusses especially on that aspect and the experiences people have had. Having said this, I have had a great experience with Itergy so far. They took my personal needs into consideration when they hired me and I have noticed that as people leave, there is company wide communication about their departure and wishing them well. We consistently see people applying to ANY job that's open and hoping they get ANYTHING. Then that "ANYTHING JOB" turns into a job that they're not happy with and within a few weeks or months, they leave the job or get let go, only to start the whole process over again. Getting ready to apply for a new job? As part of our new ongoing series, we asked MobilityWare’s Recruiters to share some tips on how to make your application stand out. 1) DON’T TALK YOURSELF OUT OF A JOB: Read the job post thoroughly, however, don’t get discouraged if you are missing a few of the listed qualifications. 2) EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM: Try to apply for a position soon after it’s posted. To ensure your resume is at the top of the pile, we recommend submitting your application early in the morning and at the beginning of the week. 3) DON’T BE SHY: Do some digging through your LinkedIn connections to identify any contacts you have at the company. A good recruiter, leveraging strong relationships with their clients, can sometimes work to create a role specifically tailored to your needs. Let me share an example to illustrate this. Recently, I worked with a candidate who needed full-time employment with flexible working hours to accommodate their children and desired a study package to continue their education. These requests, though common, became challenging to fulfill due to shifting market conditions and evolving company policies on flexible hours and remote work. Recognizing the need for a different approach, I engaged in discussions with a client who was hiring but had not specified exact role requirements. They were more interested in finding the right person than fitting someone into a predefined role. Through several conversations, we crafted a new position that matched both the candidate's needs and the client's requirements. This candidate has now been thriving in this role for a few months, balancing work, family, and study commitments seamlessly. The client is equally satisfied, having found a capable individual who fits well within their organization. This example underscores the potential for new opportunities to arise when recruiters and clients are flexible and open to dialogue. While it's not always possible to create new roles for every candidate, communicating your non-negotiables with your recruiter can sometimes lead to unique and unexpected solutions. If you're searching for a new role but have specific needs that you worry might be dealbreakers, don't hesitate to reach out. You never know what might be possible with a proactive and understanding recruiter on your side.
