THIS! I could not agree more and have been saying this for years! It's great for the colleges but not for students. Especially not for students who aren't wealthy. And, the amount of EA colleges has gone way down while ED just keeps going up so it just gets more and more obvious. Aren't we supposed to be decreasing the wealth gap? Sigh. #earlydecision #earlyaction #collegeadmissions #highlyselectivecolleges #ivyleague #collegeapplications #collegeapps #privilegewins

"There are a few ways dual enrollment can pay off for community colleges in the long run, even if they’re offering these courses at a loss, according to the working paper. If overall enrollment is down at a college, enrolling high school students is more cost-effective than leaving those seats empty, Fink noted. Dual-enrollment students may also increase funding in states with funding formulas that take into account student success metrics because of their high academic outcomes. Lastly, these programs can increase overall enrollments down the line if they serve high school students who otherwise might not have considered college and pique their interest in further education." #studentsuccess #dualenrollment #equity #collegeaccess https://lnkd.in/gSUhptPX

Experiencing the pinch of sending a kid to college. The costs are expensive and many are wondering is college worth it. How do highly selective and mid-range institutions justify the costs. Sticker shock is real. Universal free education is a great idea.

A Plan to Save Small Colleges Via @Inside-Higher-Ed Increasing the probability of survival for many small colleges involves groups of colleges affiliating under a particular structure that would facilitate both (1) a significant reduction in operating costs for each college and (2) a rationalization of each college’s academic offerings to concentrate on its strongest programs. https://bit.ly/3W2PSbQ

https://bit.ly/4ePqm2d Sharing resources across several small colleges is a good idea, but the logic of the premise--to have each school continue only their top performing and financial money maker programs--would mean a death to the liberal arts, which are not money makers for the schools, but person makers, and I'll continue to argue that the liberal arts are desperately needed now to save our democracy. The Claremont Colleges, for instance, do not just have a few programs each. Each school educates each student liberally, as in widely, to broaden their world views and experiences. And graduates people well-educated for life, not just one career.

Why are more people not talking about this? Free two-year college degrees for all? This is a big f***ing deal! 🥂 This effectively makes a college education attainable for all (a) in Massachusetts and (b) in any other jurisdiction that offers this. If you do two years in community college (and perform well), you could very well have a state school (or possibly even a private college) somewhere give you a scholarship for the final two years of undergrad. “Gov. Maura Healey on Monday signed into law the $57.78 billion Fiscal 2025 state budget, which in part establishes the MassEducate program, a new initiative that makes every community college in the state free for anyone who has never earned a degree.” https://lnkd.in/eaCSut8u

Starting with next year’s application cycle (effective for the Class of 2029), Brown University will reinstate the requirement that applicants for first-year admission submit standardized tests scores (the SAT or ACT, except in the rare circumstance when these tests are not available to a student). This will accompany enhanced communications to students and school counselors emphasizing that test scores are interpreted in the context of a student’s background and educational opportunities. #collegeadmissions #collegeenrollment #highered #testpolicy #stardardizedtest #collegecounseling
