Excited to share that our paper titled "Quantifying the environmental impact of transportation for plastic film packaging end-of-life: Landfill, incineration, physical recycling, or chemical recycling" has been published in the Journal of Resources, Conservation, and Recycling! 🎉 I want to express my gratitude to Prof. John Atkinson, Prof. Austin Angulo and Prof. Jessie Poon for their invaluable contributions and guidance throughout this research journey. 🙏 🔍This research addresses the environmental impact of transporting post-consumer polymer-based multilayer packaging waste in New York State! Our study compares GHG emissions and energy consumption across different waste management scenarios, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for improvements. Read more about our findings and proposed solutions in the full paper. 📄 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/dNvtjcjd Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged us along the way! Looking forward to more collaborations and discoveries in the future. #Research #AcademicPublishing #Collaboration #WasteManagment #Transportation #LCA #EnvironmentalImpact

Second day at the #2024RMC three-day conference in Siegburg, Germany with my colleagues Dr. Dambarudhar Parida and Tim Börner. We present some of the research activities from Empa at the booth 6, including #cellulose or #woodbased #functionalmaterials from the cellulose & wood material group, the #recyclable #flameretardant #thermoset work from the advanced fibers group, and #lifecycleaccessment #LCA case studies of the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management Group. There are many inspiring contributions by industry experts, consulting experts and scientists to give inputs towards circular plastic system. Today I got a good update on plastic recycling from an applied point of view as well. #circulareconomy #renewable #Plastics #recycle #materials

𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬: Biodegradable plastics are not only compostable but also sortable by Near-Infrared (NIR) technology, most commonly used in existing mechanical recycling facilities! Pellenc ST, a manufacturer of NIR optical sorters, has optimized a spectrometer for bioplastics as part of the European SEALIVE Project project to advance bio-based solutions. This sorting technique effectively separates biodegradable plastics from fossil-fuel based plastics. Furthermore, it can distinguish different types of bio-based plastics, should this be of demand. This means biodegradable plastics such as PLA, PHA, PBS(A), PBAT, cellulose, and others can be collected together with conventional plastic packaging and sorted for separate recycling, offering added end-of-life value. The more biodegradable plastics packaging is used and collected, the more economically feasible these streams will become at scale. Let's embrace bioplastics as a viable alternative to conventional packaging materials and take a step towards a greener future. #SEALIVE #Bioplastics #Biodegradable #SustainablePackaging #CircularEconomy
PELLENC ST contributes to the future of bio-based plastics! ♻️ The european project SEALIVE Project has gathered 24 partners to answer key questions and to shape an European policy for bio-based #plastics. 👉 To find out the Pellenc ST in-house test results and the long term perspectives: https://lnkd.in/dXzz-hzq #technology #innovation #recycling #sorting #environment #circulareconomy #WearePellencST

🌍 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗶𝗼-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 ! 🌱 The European project SEALIVE supported by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programmes, aimed to answer some key questions about the future of bio-based plastics: (1) such as their production at scale, (2) sorting from other plastics, and (3) managing their end-of-life in a sustainable way. In the case of PLA, sorting PLA-based waste is an essential step in efficient waste management and in promoting sustainable waste management practices. PLA can be recycled through different processes (including mechanical and chemical recycling), but to ensure maximum efficiency, it is crucial to sort it correctly. As such, in a recent contribution, Pellenc ST shared interesting information about bio-based plastics sorting, showing very encouraging results. According to the study, they can separate all bio-based plactis from oil-based and bio-based plastics from each other !
