When playing youth sports, we recall being told not to celebrate a goal until it actually went into the net. It sounds silly, but we mentally scored a goal on more than one occasion, only to find the shot blocked. More at: https://lnkd.in/eTRbH7ct #chasebetter

BIRTHDAY REVIEW: LOOKING BACK AT CHANGES TO TENNIS SINCE 1992 – Thanks for all the birthday wishes a few days ago. Since my 1992/93 Grand Slam trip memoir was published in 2022, I have been asked a few times which Grand Slam tournament was my favourite. The answer is none of them and all of them, for different reasons, as I outline in the book. I also get asked what are the major changes in pro tennis since the trip. That’s a more difficult question to answer but here goes with a few thoughts: VENUES / COVERAGE – All the Grand Slam tournament sites have been under almost continual expansion, especially the show courts. The ever-expanding digital age of communication has led to more expansive coverage of the Grand Slams and the tours in general, especially online. COURT SURFACES – Have seen a gradual homogenisation. The court surfaces at the Slams may all still be different colours but as time passes, they seem to play closer than ever to each other. RACKETS / STRINGS / CLOTHING – Changes to racket frames and strings have enabled players to hit the ball harder, using much more topspin than ever before. Clothing is not as standardised. Days of branded, neatly ironed polo shirts are in the past. Wonder what Ted Tinling would think? PLAYING STYLES – Have also become homogenised too, creating a baseline battle. Power predominates. Transition and net play are rarely seen. Serve and volley is a style of the past. ON-COURT BEHAVIOUR – Now characterised by a more openly aggressive demeanour. Grunting has become ubiquitous. Gamesmanship is more commonplace. Many still photos of players after winning a point show a snarling, fist-pumping imagery. PRIZE MONEY – Improved TV rights and sponsorship opportunities, have increased prize money pots significantly, especially for the Slams with a more equitable distribution too. Even losing in singles qualifying events can generate a significant cheque for the lower-ranked players. Winners receive eye-watering amounts. SOCIAL MEDIA – Has afforded huge promotional opportunities across the sport, for everyone. But the communication can be a double-edged sword. Players fan groups can often become polarised. The age of the ‘Stan’ fan is on us. Comments on players can swing between extremes of love and hate. *** The start of the Italian Open at the atmospheric Foro Italico next month will herald the 2nd anniversary of the book’s publication. What I got up to in my year-long trip back in 1992/93, is all in the book, available on Amazon and other websites too (just Google ‘In Pursuit of the Slam’). The book is also available from the Tennis Gallery, a wonderful shop in Wimbledon, selling tennis books and ephemera, well worth a visit by any tennis fan. #travel #traveling #travelinspiration #traveldiaries #wellness #followyourpassion #careerdevelopment #grandslam #inpursuitoftheslam #tennis #Wimbledon #FrenchOpen #RolandGarros #USOpen #australianopen #italianopen #talkingtennis

Since 2020 Christine Sinclair has held the record for the most goals scored in international football. But in 2024 when you search for that fact she has yet to be recognized at the top of those search results. But today we are hoping you see her there at the top. Is it because the algorithm has changed? No. Is it because society has removed the inherent bias in search? No. It’s because we have paid for it. Unfortunately, it will only be for one day, and we hope you see her there. Tomorrow, Christine will still hold the world record for the most goals scored in international football, just not according to the search engines. What if we could do this every day? What if companies could spend a bit of their ad spend to help make these athletes visible in search and finally recognized for their achievements? What if that wasn’t just today but every day? Together, we can fix this. #correcttheinternet #internationalwomensday2024 #unitednations #teamheroine Rebecca Sowden

Today’s word is Jamboree This term came to light in 1866 as a typical American word probably from jam under the significance of “ noisy drinking bout.” But there is an other account that suggests an hybrid with the French word bourrée, a kind of dance in a sensual and provocative manner. Nonetheless, in general, a jamboree is an event that expects many people which is accompanied with noise, in other terms a more than festive occasion. A typical example is a beer festival where there are open-air music and dancing. However, other gatherings exist where many individuals conglomerate with a lot excitement and fun. Cases in point, are scouting jamboree and sports jamboree. The former that was initiated in 1920 by Badden-Powell, stood for the first boy scout meeting where the word was uttered. The latter entails a third preseason football contest that serves as a dress rehearsal, so to speak, for the upcoming season. But the use of this entity is more widespread than we reckon; in baseball, it represents a festival type of tournament that eliminates certain league rigidity and encompasses teams according to grouped age and skill level daily. The same concept applies to soccer divisions where competition is so hot, the coaches are obliged to adopt a jamboree aspect to the game where, especially in youth soccer tournaments, which are modeled either on risk that emphasizes on winning or more important elements such as youth development, namely fun and healthy competition. In essence, a jamboree is a party, a celebration, or any other crowd that inspires a lot of excitement and enjoyment. Today's funny English word is Anemone( a plant of the buttercup family with very bright color flowers). #ah24477

#moveyoursport I'm excited to share more details an initiative that truly embodies our mission to elevate and nurture the sports we love. As Dyn Media GmbH our commitment to sports like handball, basketball, volleyball, hockey, and table tennis isn't just about broadcasting games—it's about driving the future of these sports by investing in their growth at the grassroots level. Our Move Your Sport initiative is at the core of this mission. This season, we're expanding this initiative, empowering our subscribers to directly support youth sports development by choosing to allocate 10% of their subscription fees to one of our five featured sports. These funds, which will total a seven-figure amount in 2024, are being funneled directly to our partner leagues to implement projects that make a tangible difference. Each league is using these resources to strengthen the foundations of their sport, ensuring that the next generation of athletes not only has the chance to play but to thrive. We believe that the positive values of sport—team spirit, solidarity, and fairness—are best transmitted to society when we engage young people. For a closer look at how Move Your Sport is making a difference, check out https://lnkd.in/ec9wWfRa where we showcase some of these incredible projects. Let’s continue to move our sports forward, together! #MoveYourSport #YouthDevelopment #SportsForTheFuture #DynMedia Marcel Wontorra Anett Sattler
