I'm not keen on new year's resolutions. But as I focussed all my 2023 to fully land at Springer Nature Group, the start of the new year feels like a good time to dial-up on some external HR-to-HR inspiration. #LifeAtSpringerNature encourages to #DevelopYourCuriosity after all, right? This week's 🚀HR OF TOMORROW conference organized by Impactic Global GmbH and hosted by Amber Vanderburg seemed like a great place to start. As I start day 2, here are my 5 highlights from day 1 (in order of appearance): No. 1 Syed Ali Abbas talking about how the role of HR senior leadership at the management table might change with the maturity of a company - from barely-funded startup to listed corporate - while repeatable high-impact processes remain the name of the game. 🏄🏾 No. 2 Lynette Silva Heelan introducing connection as a human need and showing how establishing a recognition muscle in a company can build a bridge between the purpose of the company collective and what holds meaning for the individual employee. 🌉 No. 3 Siniša Plavšin sharing how DHL Express is creating sustainable employee engagement in a tough working environment through consistency and emotional connection, e.g. handing out a physical onboarding passport filled with stickers and personal notes. ✈️ No. 4 Siniša Plavšin striking again whith an on-stage hack I would've expected to learn from my facilitation wizard friends Anjalie Nawaratne or Rucha Kapare: having dissolved the audience into 1:1 conversations, he got us back by calmly talking and clapping: "If you can hear me, clap once - 👏🏼 - "If you can hear me, clap twice - 👏🏼👏🏼 - ..." He had us all at 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. No. 5 Gijs Coppens applying due language finesse when clarifying that employees might have the RESPONSABILITY for their mental health, but companies have the bigger RESPONSE ABILITY. 🔔 Looking forward to day 2!

To welcome Autumn, we've changed our website banner back to the much-loved British garden friend, Prickles 🦔 Typically as we creep towards the end of a year, we see these things across workplaces and in the job market: ✨ Candidate movements: People are more active, looking for new roles before/ as we go into the new year. It tends to be a time when individuals re-evaluate their ambitions. 🤔 Hiring decisions: Many companies ramp up their hiring efforts to meet end-of-year objectives. This is also the time for bringing in more senior, leadership positions so they have time to settle before strategic planning. 👋 Temp, interim & projects: End of year could mean deadlines for projects but could also mean the need for additional hands for year-end and other workload. We tend to see temp and interim numbers rise in this period. 👀 Internal shuffling: We're talking restructures and contract renewals/ ends. This is usually the time for promotions when people move about. 🫰 Budget and planning: Year-end for many businesses will happen over the course of the next few months. As will strategic planning for the new year. 🤩 Appraisals: Those big year-end meetings about performance. Get yourself prepared! 📝 HR: Planning of talent pipelines and perfecting onboarding processes. Crucial to match up with the surge of hiring - temp and perm. 🫶 Health and wellness: As cold and flu season kicks in, as well as shorter days and gloomier weather, we'll see more focus on employee wellbeing initiatives. ☔ Events: We'll see an uplift in conferences, seminars, networking - you name it. People don't mind being inside anymore.

Does your boss know it's employee appreciation day today? If so, what lies in store for you today? A little thank you card, some words of affirmation, a gift? Sounds wonderful right, but if you're having to wait for appreciation once a year, we're betting it makes the rest of the working year a hard slog! So how can employers appreciate their people all year round? 💚 recognition programs are a great way of getting the whole business involved, peer nominated schemes with a manager rubber stamp provide an opportunity for everyone to have a say and ensure the right things are being celebrated, like your green ambitions  💚 make it ‘the way we do things around here’ simply saying thanks, dropping someone a personalised note, giving them a call out the blue just to offer appreciation for a specific event or task can mean the world.
