That’s the exact duration of my incredible journey at Amazon, a period marked by relentless customer obsession and the privilege of working alongside some of the most brilliant leaders to deliver value for customers at Amazon. Today, I'm thrilled to announce my next chapter ➡️ the launch of Propelli, a new venture dedicated to empowering businesses to embody the principles of customer obsession on their own Amazon journey. I was very lucky to ride Amazon's growth, going from a Senior Manager of 6 people to a Vice President with 800 people. How do we maximize our chances of being "lucky?" Part of "luck" is preparation. I had already held executive roles at smaller companies and managed larger teams, of about 30. So I had relevant skills to grow as Amazon grew. As a result, I moved up faster than most of my peers. Action: wherever you are, relentlessly grow your skills. Otherwise, when opportunity comes you may not be ready to seize it. Part of "luck" is humility. I had VP titles at three startups over a five year period before Amazon offered me a Senior Manager role. It hurt my pride to step back so far in title, but I got over it and committed to the job. I could have "held out" for a role more similar to previous roles but this would have been a mistake. Action: Be willing to take any seat you can get on the right bus. Part of luck is taking risk. I moved with my young family across the country to join Amazon. We were scared and uncertain. It is called "a risk / reward tradeoff" because high reward is often only available with increased risk. Luck is a term we associate with gambling, which means placing bets that have high returns if you bet right. Action: Take the risks. You must get on the right bus even if it is inconvenient or scary. Part of "luck" is awareness. I had been watching Amazon for years when they called me. In a previous job we had a partnership with Barnes & Noble. I watched how "brick and mortar" retail had no idea how to go online. When Amazon called, I was aware of their strength and market position. Action: You have to be able to recognize "the right bus" when it comes by. The right bus, more than anything, will be growing. Businesses that are not growing (a) are often in trouble and have lost their direction, and (b) cannot offer you the same opportunity. I also had some "pure" luck: --Multiple times less supportive managers moved on and I was reorganized under more supportive managers --I was initially able to choose a high profile, high growth project within Amazon --Amazon was far more than I predicted. I joined a successful eCommerce company. Bezos led it to diversify into AWS, consumer electronics like the Kindle and Alexa, media, and advertising. I definitely am not claiming that my same actions would always get me the same results. Without the true luck, I would have had a successful career, but most likely nothing like what happened for me. In summary: "luck" comes from being prepared and skilled, then taking risks on things that are new and growing. Banks and the car business grow slowly. Fintech and Tesla have grown quickly. #KYC: Know Your Customer I often have to face this question, "What did you learn from working with so many #MNCs, particularly while working at #Amazon? What is the secret to their success?" The other day, my university classmate Rajiv asked me the same, and I couldn't give a one-word answer to him. I said that I had learned a lot from all the places I have worked in. With Amazon in particular, I have gathered some #soft #skills that have transformed the way I look at life. Yes, you heard that right. I consider Amazon a place where, irrespective of your seniority, you always learn much more than you earn. The first and foremost among the many #leadership #principles the company agrees to, is 'customer obsession'. Amazonians obsess over their customers. For them, the customer is no less than God. Amazonians start with the customer and work backwards. As your daily grind continues along with your work at Amazon, these leadership principles get ingrained in your fabric. After leaving Amazon (way back in 2019), in all the #businesses I've worked with afterward, I have practised this particular principle of #customer #obsession. First, identify what the customer wants. Everything else will eventually fall in place. I see many early-stage #startups and lots of budding business ideas stressing majorly on how unique their #products or #services are, and how they will ease their customers' lives. What they fail to address, is the effort to identify what, exactly, their customer wants. They miss out on the simple idea, that, only when I obsess over solving the customers' problems, will I be able to sell my product or service. Every successful #advertising professional, more or less, thinks the same way. And it's not a one-man job. Without a robust #team of go-getters, you cannot solve your customers' problems all by yourself. I was fortunate to belong to an amazing team at Amazon, and I'm thankful to all of them for being a part of my journey called life (not just work-life). I think it's time we start looking at things from a problem-solving perspective, as my coach Vikram Anand repeatedly suggests. Do you want to know the real reason I left Amazon? When I looked at the people above me on the ladder... my managers, my skip managers, and my directors... I realized that I didn't want their lives. Over-worked, over-traveled, few vacations, working in the office, corporate wardrobes, uninspired, talking about Amazon advertising all week. And if we're keeping it real... all of that for too small of homes. 🤷🏾♀️ No shade to anyone who chose that path. I just realized it couldn't be me. Once I created a vision board for what my perfect life looked like, it was pretty clear that Amazon didn't fit the vision. Entrepreneurship did. So I quit. I knew that, despite the risk, I had to bet on myself if I wanted to build the colorful, mutli-faceted life I envisioned. So what's the lesson here? If you are feeling stuck on a corporate ladder, look at the person in your future role and ask yourself, "Is that the type of life I want to live?" If the answer is no, you have some thinking to do.

Each failure tells a story of experimentation and learning. After all, every one of them is evolving... In our personal and professional lives, we can learn a lot from this approach. Every setback, every mistake, is a chance to learn and improve.
