My "Jerry Maguire” Manifesto I’ve got a bone to pick with hiring managers. I believe you’re overlooking a huge demographic of hirees—women in their forties and fifties, looking to re-enter the work space after taking time to raise a family. Full disclosure: for the past few weeks, I’ve been applying for copywriter jobs, careful to pick the ones I know I’m qualified for. By that, I mean I’m not applying for the ones looking for candidates who've spent the past ten years at a large agency, spearheading award-winning campaigns for luxury brands. But ones that fit perfectly with the skills I possess at this moment, so as to be a confident asset to the company. I’m not delulu, after all. These women are being passed over even before they’ve had the opportunity to be interviewed. They’re receiving form letters praising their skills, yet the company is moving in another direction, only for the company to re-post the same job two weeks later. These women, who are erasing all dates from their resumés, are a perfect fit for the listing they’ve taken the time to carefully analyze. Unfortunately, they’re not being considered, not even being spoken to. They are severely overlooked and undervalued. Do you know what they’ve spent the past twenty years doing? Exactly what you’re looking for! They’ve been multitasking, teaching, coordinating, scheduling, networking, promoting, writing, problem-solving, co-founding non-profits, supporting the in-house CEO, all while continuing their education, and all before dinner. They are strong, and scrappy and tireless and social. I keep hearing complaints about the younger generation not wanting to come in to the office. I personally know a young candidate who’s been fired a few times for not wanting to work in office…when their office was in the same building they lived in! Yet, every time this young person was fired, they were re-hired by a different company, at a higher salary. Women in their forties and fifties look forward to coming into an office to work, as they haven’t worn their ‘outside clothes’ in years! They also want to collaborate, to be a part of the culture, to help you succeed. Plus, given the opportunity, they will create that campaign, that will win your company awards, because that’s just what they do. They don’t just survive, they thrive. So, the next time you glance at that resumé of the woman (or man) who has taken a short hiatus to raise the next generation, give them a closer look—and an interview, you just might be surprised at what they bring to the table. P.S. Not one word of this was written by AI. #copywriter #jobs #hiring #hr #women #womenover40 #womeninadvertising #advertising

It's essential to stand firm in your worth, especially in business. As a seasoned professional with a two-decade track record, I have learned the power of saying no. It took me a good, long while, and it still is not easy. Free work doesn't lead to success; it only invites frustration. When faced with requests for unpaid work to determine if someone MAY hire you, remember that your skills are earned and valuable. As women in business, we must set boundaries and demand fair compensation for our expertise. Saying no asserts your value and integrity. I had to say no recently and honestly, it felt like something I had to do. So, if someone asks for free work, my response is a resounding NO. I offer high-quality services at competitive rates, knowing the value my team and I bring to the table. Let's empower each other to stand strong and uphold our worth in every business interaction. I KNOW Amanda Wick is with me!! On that note, Happy Friday! #KnowYourWorth #FairCompensation #WomenInBusiness

Career Coach ✨ I help WOC stop playing safe, become FEARLESS, and land 6-figure jobs they love! Speaker. Personal Branding Expert. HR Veteran. | 👸🏾 Sign up for the FREE Six-Figure Workshop👇🏽
Hey Ladies, If you're a lawyer ⚖️, the Fearless Branding Formula WILL work for you. Let me tell you about my client Talia. Talia is a lawyer, and when she came to me, her issue was job hopping. In the last decade, the longest she was at one company was for 1 1/2 years. She was ready to leave her current job because the environment was toxic and there were no advancement opportunities. 🏃🏽♀️ She was already making six-figures, but she wanted to make more, have a better work culture, have more growth opportunities and more stability. So here's what we worked on: ✅ We changed her narrative around job hopping. Previously, when she told people she changed companies, she used to always defend it. But through working together, we made it part of her brand. We positioned her as someone who has diverse work experience. ✅ We helped her prepare for the six-figure interview and the dreaded "Why are you leaving now?" question by helping her convey that she wanted to find an aligned company where she could stay long term. ✅ We reformatted her resume. The result? 🔥 She accepted an offer for a Fortune 500 company 🔥 She got a $20k increase 🔥 AND she's still there two years later This is possible for you too. ➡️ If you’re ready to land a six-figure promotion and increase your salary by $20,000 - $50,000, then join the Fearless Branding Formula. The Fearless Branding Formula helps women of color increase their salary by $20,000 - $50,000 and land a six-figure promotion, in 90 days 🔥 Enroll now: https://buff.ly/40Zd8tj #careerdevelopment #professionalwomen #latricelessons

Hi Network. It's been a minute, and yes I am still "funemployed." Despite hundreds of applications, too many calls, time consuming interviews, and constantly being ghosted by recruiters and companies, I keep trying. It is DRAINING. I'm at the point where I don't even know where to look anymore - I don't know who else to reach out to in my network. I've received messages from people in similar positions looking for guidance, but I'm just a girl in her (late) 20's looking for guidance herself. I'm overwhelmed. I created this sheet with job boards in hopes it can help others on their hunt. Jordan Wissler helped drop in some gems, too. Being a person of color trying to make it in the creative industry is already challenging enough with the lack of opportunities available to us, but having each other to rely on is motivation enough to keep trying. If you have any other #jobhuntingtips or resources in #marketing, #socialmedia, #copywriting, or other #creativejobs please comment below or email me (paulinaa.april@gmail.com) And if you're looking for work yourself, and you see someone in my network you want to speak to, I'm happy to facilitate an intro. Don't give up! 😤

REFRAMING THE IMAGE Scrolling through Insta I saw a post championing ‘non-typical’ employment history: specifically a gap on the CV. There is no detail (deliberately) about why the interviewee has this gap; the message is that the candidate was qualified, could demonstrate relevant experience therefore they were given the role. BRILLIANT! It is no ones business why you have a section on your application which appears to reflect ‘unemployment’. Unfortunately, so many of the responses reflect how deeply society is indoctrinated to uphold the conditions which only benefit a very tiny proportion of the population (fuck the patriarchy and the 1%!). It speaks to the value we place on paid vs unpaid employment; how often have you heard (or said) ‘just a…[mum/wife/daughter/etc.]’? YOU ARE NEVER JUST: you are a kaliedoscope of your cumulative experience. There is a clear demonstration of the assumptions made about ‘Career Diversion’ (taking time away from paid employment, [articularly when this is for the purposes of domestic/care responsibilities you are at the farthest point from taking a break!) is not an active member of society - somehow, because they are performing unpaid tasks they have relinquished the ability to read and therefore ‘keep up to date with trends’. That periods of economic inactivity for sickness indicates a lack of commitment to employment - this is especially noticeable when people have a ‘flaky’ CV that shows, perhaps, 6 jobs in 2 years - rather than celebrating those people who have decided to exit an unacceptable environment. I’ve been lucky to have been able to shape my employment, but this has not always been because I was able to make a good or fully informed choice. A great deal of creating this business has been as a response to the context - being unable to fulfill my contracted role because of challenging the sausage factory/sickness/grief/advocating for my children/caring for other family/adding to my education [delete as appropriate] - has left me with no choice but to find a solution. How we talk about our expectations and beliefs about how the population should behave has a great deal of power; if we are repeating beliefs have we considered if what we are saying is fair, does it align with our core values? How can we start conversations that offer an alternative approach? How do we look at this image through a different frame? How can I help you to live your values? What can I do to enable you to embody your authenticity? I’m standing by with a chain saw and my best pair of Ruby Shoos shoes to smash that crappy pine frame and put your new image into a bejewelled, gilt monument to your fabulousness.

“I see you have a 10 year gap in your work experience - can you tell us about that?” I had a meeting to day with a prospective client. Prior to the meeting I had been asked for my resume - in the 14 years I’ve been doing this, I don’t recall being asked for my resume. I dutifully set about creating what I thought would help this particular group know ME. I first noted that I have a husband, 4 kids and 3 dogs. I included a section showing my previous life in consulting in NYC and a section on the significant volunteer roles I’ve held. I wrote a section about the journey I’ve taken from being a solopreneur to having a team of 10 and how my real passion has become providing a workplace for women. I included a graphic representation of our core values of which I am extremely proud. I included a chart showing some key differences between a solopreneur bookkeeper, a CPA accounting firm and our team. I sent the "resume" 2 days ahead of time. In the meeting I was grilled (I am using that term accurately) on my clients and my knowledge of debits and credits. For over an hour. And the first question I got asked is at the top of this post - the time period they are referring to is 1999-2010. My answer: I had 4 kids in 5 years and it took me 10 years to feel I could turn my attention to something additional. I can’t even imagine what I would do if I were in the position of newly trying to enter the workforce, but I feel sure I wouldn’t have made it to the point of a meeting with at least one firm.
