This World Children's Day, UNICEF is celebrating children's rights by calling for a minute of loudness that invites children to be seen, heard, and empowered to share their views on issues impacting their lives. Our latest blog explores how the PACE model – Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy – can help children to express their emotions. It is an approach we can all use with the children in our lives to create safety that allows children to be themselves and helps adults to truly understand them. The beautiful story of Dragon, which you can download via the blog, uses the theme of anger to highlight how slowing down to listen to or notice the “little” details in a child's feelings and responding with a PACE-based approach helps parents, carers, and those who work with children to build a bridge between what little ones express on the outside and what they experience within. Since mid-July, children's rights have been fully embedded into Scots law - a pivotal moment for Scotland. But what does this mean for the everyday lives of babies, children and young people? The newly launched State of Children's Rights report provides important insights into their views, experiences, and often challenging realities they face when it comes to their rights. Some of the stories shared are difficult to read. They highlight the gaps between the legal frameworks that exist in Scotland and their lived experiences. My PhD research explored the role and value of parents and carers as they interact with professionals in Scotland, focusing on children aged 3-5yrs. One of my research questions examined how children's rights are experienced within this age group from a parents' and professionals' perspective. My findings uncovered many misunderstandings about what children's rights mean for young children. I also found that parents and carers, as duty bearers and rights holders, often faced challenges advocating for, and defending their children's rights. ▶️ Today is a special day as we recognise World Children’s Day on 20 November, which is UNICEF’s global day for children, by children. It marks the anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and serves as a call to action for schools, communities, and institutions to engage with and support children. 🎯 The 2024 theme for World Children’s Day is “Listen to the Future”. We're encouraging the world to actively listen to children’s hopes, dreams, and visions for the future, promoting children’s right to participation. Children should be empowered to voice their opinions about the world they want to live in, and it’s all of our responsibility to listen and support their visions. Children are the beating heart of humanity, the physical embodiment of love, hope and curiosity. They represent the future, and their creative spark is wonderful and inspires an overwhelming desire to protect and nurture them. With this in mind, we must remember that their voices matter most in a world where stoking the fires of hope is becoming increasingly consequential. Their perspectives are among the most important to listen to and protect, as they will shape the future of our world. At the Waterloo Region Family Network, we work diligently to help children, including those with exceptional needs and disabilities, and their families access the necessary resources and support.
