Do you have or work with health and care focused #innovations? Do you want to learn how to overcome barriers that can prevent the adoption and success of these innovations? The road from idea to commercialisation can be filled with speed bumps, diversions, green lights, red lights, and ‘turn around when possible’ situations. Join us for an exciting evening of discussion with four innovators who have learnt from their experiences and can now pass on how they navigated this sometimes unpredictable road. The innovators presenting represent a variety of working backgrounds, products, and barriers experienced whilst developing their innovations in the health and care landscape. Themes will include the development of health tech, meeting regulations, market access, and adapting your product to meet the needs of the demand. In addition to hearing the innovator perspective, we will also be sharing how we can support innovators to overcome barriers and steer the course from idea to adoption. There will be opportunity to pose your questions to the panel of innovators and the Health Innovation Wessex (HIW) team during our Q&A session. This is a fantastic opportunity for innovators and those in the health setting to learn from each other to aid the adoption of innovation in health and care. I had the pleasure of attending the NZ Initiative’s Health Innovator Summit yesterday, where I heard several experts, including our new Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora Commissioner, Lester Levy, speak about the past, current and future of our healthcare system. One of the key takeaways for me from the summit was that in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment, it is more crucial than ever to not only maintain but also strengthen our clinical frontline. As emphasised, safeguarding our clinical workforce isn’t just about maintaining numbers—it’s about ensuring they are equipped with the tools they need to deliver the highest quality care. This is where digital health plays a critical role—not as a replacement, but as a powerful enabler of better outcomes for patients, families, and communities. As Lester stated, Health NZ has faced challenges, particularly in digital transformation, due to an overemphasis on organisational structure and the sunk cost fallacy—remaining tied to outdated investments. However, with a shift in mindset and by leveraging the right assets, we can create a more connected and efficient healthcare system without taking several years to do so. The modern, scalable, and up-to-date technologies at our disposal can enable clinicians to make better-informed decisions, offer personalised care, and engage with patients in ways that were previously unimaginable. Despite the current focus on cutting costs, the true path forward lies in shifting our attention to service delivery, localised care, and building up social capital. Now it's time to deliver—we need to act quickly and with unwavering focus to ensure that every NZ’er is at the centre of our care. Despite the ongoing momentum towards value-based healthcare (#VBHC), implementation is fragmented and mostly confined to localized pilot programs. These are currently operating alongside traditional approaches, rather than as a systematic widespread change of practice and culture The shift to VBHC requires a collective effort, spanning the entire patient pathway and engaging all healthcare stakeholders. For effective collaboration, stakeholders need to be clear on their roles and other stakeholders’ roles in transitioning to VBHC Recently, the European Alliance for Value in Health published its report "A Compass for Collaboration: Navigating Stakeholders’ Roles in Transitioning To Value-Based Healthcare". ❔ What can the Danish Parliament's politicians do to promote innovation in the Danish healthcare system?   ❔ And what are the potentials and barriers we have for health innovation?   These were some of the questions that the Parliament's Health Committee posed to a group of health innovation experts.   One of the experts is Jacob Berthelsen, CEO in the Aarhus-based IT company Enversion A/S. Jacob shared his views under the headline "Private sector opportunities and challenges in contributing to health innovation". And he brought a large backpack from Aarhus filled with concrete solution proposals:   💬 "Although many of us are working to improve the healthcare system through innovation, it is ultimately the politicians who can change the underlying conditions and framework for innovation. Currently, there are challenges associated with all parts of an innovation project; concept validation, product development and scaling. These challenges call for a new framework for how we collaborate across the public and private sector. We need to be more willing to share the risks, focus on problems instead of predefined solutions, and create a culture where business success within the healthcare sector attracts more risk-tolerant capital"   CEO in Danish Life Science Cluster, Diana Arsovic, was also invited to share her thoughts on the subject. She presented two recommendations to the politicians:   💬 "We should establish more innovative public-private partnerships. It's vital that the partnerships fucus on needs and aim high for specific challenges. Secondly, we must invest with a focus on value. This means enhancing the development of competencies and tools for shared evaluation criteria that focus on value creation, such as efficient workflows or improved processes for citizens. And they should be implemented in innovative procurement and payment models".   DLSC and Enversion are both important players in Health Innovation Aarhus and we are happy to collaborate with them for a better health care system that is geared towards innovation. Actually, you can hear everything they said at the meeting. And also what the other experts had as input for the politicians and the following round of questions and answers. A good suggestion for a Friday movie, perhaps? We bet the politicians went home with a lot of health on their mind 👏
