An extremely thought provoking piece of writing Andy. In my very humble opinion, having been on both sides, and axes involved, it stops short of suggesting that the engineering lead you suggest would be successful, would be best served through a horizontally integrated approach with a single end purpose, rather than the current vertical approach where the end game (and short term profits/political gains to be had seem to be uppermost…..) appears to be less important to those grown-ups “higher up the chain”. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments and would respectfully build on them by suggesting, no doubt controversially, - that perhaps it’s past time to consider a single national approach to this very significant challenge - using all the lessons learned in developing UK plc over the last 8 decades - and deliver what’s needed at scale, more quickly - at least giving the next generations a fighting chance to move vertically again once the end game has been achieved? I personally think it’s worth serious thought - supported by respected organisations such as your own. Armour on, fully charged…..
