#FunFoodFactFriday On June 14, 1892, Nathan Handwerker was born. He was the founder of a small hot dog stand that became Nathan’s Famous. Handwerker immigrated to the United States from Poland with his family in 1912. One of his first jobs was slicing bread rolls for a restaurant in Coney Island. The restaurant, Feltman’s, served hot dogs for 10 cents each. Legend has it that two of the singing waiters at Feltman’s, Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante, talked Handwerker into opening a competing hot dog stand at 5 cents a frank. In 1916, Handwerker started a small stand with $300 in savings. His wife, Ida, created the hot dog recipe using her grandmother’s secret spice recipe. People initially were skeptical of the cheaper hot dogs, but Handwerker had an idea to fix that. He invited workers from the nearby Coney Island Hospital to eat for free as long as they wore their hospital uniforms to do so. The ploy worked. People perceived the new food as “healthy” when they saw healthcare workers eating them, and the business took off. The original Nathan’s Famous still stands at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island and is open 365 days per year. The company now grosses over $100 million annually. Other Fun Facts: *** Handwerker termed his all-beef dogs “Kosher style” because they weren’t made from pork or other meats. However, the meat wasn’t technically rabbi-supervised Kosher. *** One of Nathan’s biggest promotions is their 4th of July hot dog eating contest, which began in 1972. It happens every year at the original Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island, and is even televised by ESPN. *** In 2017, Nathan’s Famous officially became the hot dog brand of Major League Baseball – the first time the MLB had named an official hot dog sponsor. #foodmanufacturing #cpgindustry #forhireresults #nowyouknow

It's almost here—the most wonderful time of the year! But for marketers, it raises the eternal question, "How do we show appreciation to our clients?" Our team has wrestled with this question for years, and we've varied our answers between gifts like Christmas cards and dreaded Christmas peanuts. A few years ago, my colleague Mallory Weaver and I sat down, determined to find new and meaningful gifts for our clients. Here are some simple rules we follow: ▶️ Get ahead of the game. It's hard to make a splash with client gifts in December, especially when you send the same Hickory Farms basket with assorted cheeses and sausages as everyone else. Start early in the year and send gifts before the holiday rush. ▶️Stay on brand. You don't want to send clients something that makes them question why you chose it. Send a gift that complements your brand and offers value to clients. Focus on meaningful gifts and gestures that are repeatable and memorable. ▶️Avoid waste. Do not buy gifts and ship them to lists that haven't been reviewed or curated in weeks, months, or even years. If you have yet to speak with a client in the current year, don't send them an assortment of flavored popcorn to their office. ▶️Make it personal. Nothing says going through the motions, like sending multiple contacts in an office the same fruit basket. Usually, the cards are thrown away, and the gifts are laid out in the kitchen for everyone in the office, with no recognition of the sender. This is our practical client gift process: ▶️In the summer, we begin reviewing our lists with our office leaders to send gifts in early November. That means we are the first gifts our clients receive. ▶️We are a construction company based in Tennessee and Texas, so we send electronic gift cards for G5 Cattle & Meats. Our clients choose from world-class products, which reinforce our gritty brand. ▶️Because our clients go to the website and choose their favorite cuts of meat, we only pay for the redeemed gift cards, not to ship peanuts or fruit cake to unverified people and locations. ▶️Our clients select the steaks they want, which are shipped directly to them. The shipment doesn't get caught up in the company's break room but goes to their homes. We've had outstanding success since we started this program several years ago. The G5 product is top-notch, and it's been a memorable and meaningful way for us to say thank you. If you're looking for an excellent way to thank your clients for a great year, contact Dana Sloane at G5 Cattle and Meats. It's a family-owned and operated farm-to-table ranch in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Crikey. I'm anything but a food activist but this M&S post stopped me in my tracks. 15 million loaves of bread!! (See below) I love carving a pumpkin as much as the next person, but I can't look at this without thinking, "what a waste." 😟 A few caveats before anyone starts hammering me: 1) I'm not an expert. 2) ChatGPT has helped me with the stats. 3) I'm just pondering this on a coffee break (with a Garibaldi). 4) I am very keen for people to point out the errors in my calculations, knowledge, understanding or thought process. 3,000 acres of land in the UK is used for pumpkin growing*. The soil needs to be rich, well-drained, and sunny, so it is probably also suitable for wheat. 3,000 acres of wheat would make 15 million loaves of bread**! The GBP yield per acre of pumpkins (which are largely wasted as Halloween decorations) is a minimum of £3,000-£4,000+, whereas wheat is just £500-£1,000. I completely understand why farmers grow pumpkins. If I were a farmer, I would grow pumpkins, but is it not an indication that the system is properly broken? Absolutely nothing to do with recruiting FDs but it make me a bit sad and I'm hoping someone can give me a more positive slant on this. #foodwaste #costofliving #sustainability #coffeebreak *source: Countryside Online and The Guardian **source: NAWG.
