“One size does not fit all”…Treatment for addiction should be tailored to each individual. Harm reduction mindset is needed by professionals to get those with addiction to be open to treatment and a life without substances. We can’t help them if they’re dead. I do believe abstinence of all substances should be the goal. When someone has developed the disorder of addiction to the stage of Chronic Degenerative, their neuro-pathways are pretty ingrained. Offering an option to “use less” could lead to a mindset of ambivalence. This could lead to addiction switching. “I won’t use heroin anymore. I’ll just stick to alcohol.” The mind will stay in the active addiction cycle. This is not freedom for our friends with substance use disorder. Part of the findings of this study also shows that involving the family in their loved one’s journey to recovery helped with their own recovery. There is a lot of chaos around addiction.
Director of Social Work and Spiritual Care at Michigan Medicine | Lecturer at Eastern Michigan University
"Abstinence is not everybody’s goal, but in our patient group, those who achieved abstinence did best overall – something in keeping from research elsewhere. It’s been my experience as a professional that abstinence as a goal is not well received or supported in some circles, yet undoubtedly it is something some people coming for help want and something that significant numbers of people can achieve (More than 60% of those who completed treatment at LEAP reported abstinence at 4 years in our study)." (CO) Dependent? Here's how to heal Our brilliant speaker is Dr. Stephanie Carinia ! Addiction, trauma, and personality problems are her areas of expertise. What drives her is dissecting the reasons behind our actions and assisting you in self-understanding so that you can re-establish a connection with your intuition. That’s the reason she chose to study psychology in the first place: the reasons behind our actions (I took the easy route and began by studying law). We constantly engage with one another in our day-to-day interactions. We will come into contact with how our personalities function during this exchange. We will experience triggers during our interactions. From the workplace to friendships, which are already more intimate, to love relationships at the top of the pyramid, where we will be most activated since they demand the greatest amount of intimacy. The likelihood that defence mechanisms will be activated and issues will ensue increases with the level of emotional involvement. She has a postgraduate degree in clinical psychology from the University of Amsterdam, which is the equivalent of a PsyD, as well as a BSc, MSc, and MSc. In the Netherlands, She works as a so-called registered clinical psychologist, or “gezondheidszorgpsycholoog.” In addition, she has training in psychodynamic work, schema focused therapy, and is a registered CBT, EMDR, and MBT therapist. Perinatal mental health is a passion of mine. I love working with people who are growing their families and working through all the accompanying growing pains. Perinatal refers to the time before, during, and after birth. It is truly a pleasure working with clients in this season of life by helping to fill the gaps that exist in care, support, and education. So, who would be a good fit for perinatal mental health therapy? Maybe you are trying to conceive, undergoing fertility treatments, or working to understand your family planning options. Maybe you are pregnant and coping with difficult symptoms, or feeling anxious, afraid, or depressed. Perhaps you are struggling to navigate changing relationship dynamics as you enter parenthood or add to your family. You might be struggling postpartum. You might be grieving a miscarriage. There is no way I could write a list long enough to cover the vast range of experiences that people have during this intense period of life, but I can say that whatever you are experiencing, it deserves to be talked about, and I’d love to be here for you ❤️ Visit hlptherapy.com to learn more about how we can work together. #acceptingclients #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealthmatters #prenatal #postpartum
