A community health advocate shared with the JFM collective that they recently experienced the Mandela Effect when talking with peers about the Power of Language video from BHA’s Lift the Label recovery campaign. The advocate recalled a video featuring Dr. Medlock speaking about intentional recovery language and efforts to decrease stigma. When the advocate attempted to find and share the video with their peers, they searched the Lift the Label campaign website only to find that the Power of Language video DID NOT feature Dr. Medlock. The continued erasure of Dr. Medlock and the apparent lack of accountability within the BHA, coupled with the misuse of government dollars for seemingly petty reasons, demand a collective outrage. This episode is not just an isolated incident; it is a symptom of a broader issue that needs urgent attention. The harm caused by the BHA’s actions, led by Barnes, is not only a disservice to Dr. Medlock but also to the community she tirelessly serves. The JFM collective calls for a reckoning, demanding that the BHA address and rectify this act of anti-Blackness and erasure, ensuring that such incidents do not persist in the future and that Dr. Medlock’s transformational impact is honored. As we confront the troubling erasure of Dr. Medlock from the Lift the Label campaign video, one cannot help but wonder: What other vital contributions of Dr. Medlock have been similarly erased, casting a shadow on the true extent of the impact she has made in the realm of community-centered behavioral health reform?

The population is ageing. Great opening keynote address from Amanda Thompsell at the The British Psychological Society FPOP 2024 conference. Some take home messages and disturbing statistics: - Globally 1 in 2 people are ageist against older people - Ageism led to worse outcomes in a number of mental health conditions including depression. A priority for NHS England is to increase the number of older adults completing treatment for anxiety and depression. Focus going forward for dementia: - Access - Diagnosis – subtyping - Flow in acute hospitals – continuity - Outcome measures - Increased need to skill up colleagues - Disease modifying treatments - Disease modifying treatments Parity of esteem between physical and mental health is essential for all age groups. Innovation and collaboration are key, highlighting the important role of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme #FPOP2024

News from First Report Managed Care: "Only about 20% of people receiving behavioral health care actually have measuring based-care. Imagine if you had asthma and you didn't get pulmonary function tests. Imagine if you had some heart disease or had a history of an MI heart attack and you didn't get an EKG. How do we treat depression and anxiety without measuring it—without surfacing it to identify who has it, and then measuring if people are getting better or not?" - Tom Zaubler, MD, MPH Come join us for the first installment of a captivating two-part series featuring an expert committed to minimizing emergency department visits through the implementation of behavioral health integrations. Dr Zaubler will offer valuable insights on providing patients with essential support within a primary care environment, fostering proactive care in suicide prevention and ideation, all while alleviating the strain on emergency department physicians. #FirstReportManagedCare #FRMC #suicideprevention #behaviorialhealthintegration #EDvisits

It can feel almost impossible to keep up with patient messages in the EMR/EHR. Did you notice the volume of messages increase during the pandemic? You were not imagining it. In a 2023 JAMA article by Bernstein et al., which was recently highlighted by the American Psychological Association: "The total monthly message volume (from patients) increased from 4,661 in the prepandemic period to 44,929 in the midpandemic period, an increase of 861.5%." It can be hard to find time for self-care when you are responding to messages at all hours of the day. Call to Action: Set EMR downtime. ~When you are not on call, choose a window of time each day to purposefully not interact with the EMR. ~You can break this into different blocks of time, but the total should be at least 10 hours. You need time for rest. Take that time. 📢 Publication Alert: I'm thrilled to share our latest research on "Telehealth Adoption for Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders in Minnesota and North Dakota: A Quasi-Experimental Study" 🧠💻 published in mHealth Journal 🌟 Key Highlights: 👉 The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a massive surge in telehealth for treating Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and Mental Health Care (MHC). 👉 Minnesota saw a significant spike in telehealth use, with larger initial increases for both SUDs and MHC. 👉 North Dakota, although starting smaller, showed a more sustained and gradual increase in telehealth usage, paving the way for long-term access to behavioral health services. 📈 Over 3.4 million mental health telehealth claims and 580,000 claims for SUDs were analyzed, providing critical insights into telehealth's role in expanding care in rural and urban settings. Our findings suggest that telehealth is not just a temporary solution but a sustainable model for improving healthcare access in the post-pandemic era. What is an “Emergence Reaction” with ketamine? Today Adam and I are discussing what an “Emergence Reaction” is. The bottom line is that it is a state of confusion that can occur when a patient is recovering from a strong dose of ketamine. This usually happens in ER’s and operating rooms where patients receive a rapid IV push of ketamine. In a clinical setting where we are treating behavioral health conditions this is rare. For one thing the doses are much much lower. Additionally we have made sure to prepare the patient for the experience. The patient knows exactly what to expect and also has our staff to help hold space for them as the ketamine wears off. This underscores the fact that, in an outpatient setting, the use of ketamine is fundamentally different from how it is used in an emergency department or operating room. That is why we refer to it as “Ketamine for Non-Anesthetic Indications” (KNAI). This is totally different from the use of ketamine as an anesthetic agent. If you are new to my channel, my name is Carl Bonnett. I am the Founder and Medical Director of Klarisana and have been actively involved in the practice of ketamine and psychedelic medicine since 2015. Klarisana operates ketamine-based behavioral health centers in Colorado and Texas. I was trained as an emergency physician and also served for 20 years in the Army National Guard. I deployed four times in support of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. “Only 19.2% [of participants with Body Dysmorphic Disorder] were diagnosed in the same year of symptom onset, and 38.5% were diagnosed 1–5 years after onset. Worryingly, 19.2% received a diagnosis 5–10 years following onset, while 23.1% were diagnosed 10–29 years after onset.” These delays boil down to a lack of awareness, both in the general public and importantly amongst health professionals - coupled with significant shame affecting people with BDD. Many people with BDD also turn to cosmetic procedures long before considering psychological support. This stresses the huge importance of cosmetic practitioners being able to identify BDD and refer on for support when needed. We need to do better with more research, training and public awareness of this distressing and often debilitating condition. #bodydysmorphicdisorder #bdd #research #bodyimage #mentalhealth #cosmeticsurgery

#Accountability, opportunities for early involvement, and thoughtfulness are paramount in patient engagement in research. My colleagues and I just published a paper describing how we engaged patient partners in helping develop a grant for a self-compassion intervention and a protocol for how we will engage patient partners once the project receives further funding. We also report on how engagement shaped the directions of our grant. This is a great read for anyone planning their own engagement protocol or interested in learning more about the benefits of patient engagement in #grantwriting. #ppi #patientexperience #patientengagement #researchprotocol
