Are we living in a paradoxical feminist world?
As part of being Project Coordinator at CDF LSR, I recently visited our associated NGO, situated mere minutes from campus.
On talking with the women, I realised the harsh reality of rampant domestic violence and gender discrimination which led me to stop and reflect on a troubling irony... Here's why.
LSR has long been celebrated for its feminist ethos, with students excelling in every field and championing women's rights. Our campus is like a sanctuary of liberation from social norms, where we thrive without restrictions, encouraged to break discrimination cycles. Yet, just outside, the world moves in stark contrast.
The paradox is that we proudly proclaim our commitment to empowering women, but have we truly made a difference beyond our gates?
LSR alumnae have shattered glass ceilings in male-dominated fields, but just 4 minutes away, women struggle to assert basic rights - the right to safety, autonomy, and survival.
This paradox raises tough questions:
- Does our commitment to feminism extend beyond our campus walls, or are we merely reinforcing a bubble of privilege?
- Does our feminist narrative resonate beyond our insulated community?
- Have we neglected the most vulnerable women, mere steps from our doorstep?
This experience serves as a sobering reminder: our work is far from over. We must bridge the gap between our ideals and the gritty truth outside. It's time to reexamine our approach, ensure our empowerment extends beyond the "red walls" of LSR, and create tangible change in the lives of women who need it most.
Phenomenal! Well done.
