Chevron launches $500 million fund to invest in clean tech Chevron Corp.’s venture arm launched a fund — its third — with a $500 million commitment to invest in clean energy technologies. The Future Energy Fund III “enables Chevron to see around corners, evaluate long horizon bets not currently connected to our business,” the company said, citing fusion, direct air capture and batteries as examples. The fund will also help expand investment in low carbon fuels and the transformation of carbon to higher-value products, the company said. Oil firms have been investing in tech companies focused on biofuels, wind, solar, carbon capture, digital energy and electric vehicles as they seek to diversify their portfolios amid the global push to reduce emissions and transition to clean energy. The first Future Energy Fund launched in 2018 and was followed up by a second in 2021 for a total $400 million commitment, not all of which has been invested as of this date, the company said. Chevron has launched its third ($500M) CVC fund ▶ Future Energy Fund III - sized at $500m - will invest in renewable energy technology companies whose focus areas include decarbonisation, mobility, energy decentralisation, fusion energy, direct air capture and batteries. ▶ Its first Future Energy Fund was created in 2018 ▶ The second Future Energy Fund was launched 3 years later, managing $400m in capital altogether. More than 30 companies have received funding from the first two funds, including emissions-free hydrogen producer Aurora Hydrogen, electric vehicle charging station operator Electric Era and Carbon Clean Solutions, which is developing carbon capture technology. EnCap Investments Seals a Breezy Deal: Triple Oak Power Goes to ECP for Up to $750mn EnCap Energy Transition has successfully sold its 8 GW onshore wind platform, Triple Oak Power, to Energy Capital Partners (ECP). The deal is believed to generate sale proceeds between $500mn and $750mn, according to reports. 📈 ECP's Wind Power Play - ECP's acquisition of Triple Oak Power’s portfolio, primarily in western and Midwest markets, stands out in the current landscape, where high-quality wind development companies are scarce outside the ERCOT market in the US. 🌱 Three-Year Growth Story: EnCap's journey with Triple Oak began in Oct’20 through a majority equity investment, fuelling the latter’s strategy of focusing on bridging the gap from the early stage uncertainties in development to delivering shovel-ready, utility-scale wind facilities. 🔄 Continued Divestment Trend: This sale represents EnCap's third major renewable platform divestment, following the sale of Jupiter Power to BlackRock and a $1.6bn deal with ENGIE to sell Broad Reach Power. 📊 EnCap's Strategic Approach: EnCap continues to execute its strategy of developing high-potential platforms and divesting them for maximized returns. Octopus Energy valuation hits $9bn after investors up stakes. 📈 The deal saw Generation Investment Management, chaired by the US politician and prominent climate activist, and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board up their stakes in the British energy company. The two groups now own 13% and 12% of Octopus Energy respectively. Private market funds are back again buying global listed infrastructure assets with (1) ECP (Energy Capital Partners) buying renewables owner & developer Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure Plc for a 22% premium and (2) KKR acquiring a stake in Labrador Island Link for C$1.19b from listed utility, Emera. Most of the FUM in infrastructure has been raised via private markets but most of the assets are in listed markets. This ongoing acquisition process is a positive driver of returns for global listed infrastructure investors.
