The East End still needs more housing that is affordable. https://lnkd.in/eY9EDKB2 Officials in villages, towns, counties, and many states are figuring out that the loud and vocal minority is just that. Studies on Long Island and nationwide consistently show that 60-75% of community members see the need for more housing and support zoning changes to accomplish that.

What is the role of government in addressing our housing challenges? Professor Lily Geismer encourages a turn toward European-style social housing, saying in her article: "This vision of social housing has a chance to undo the mistakes of the postwar era, which stigmatized public housing, and produced substandard and segregated residences for only the poorest of Americans. But for such programs to truly solve the affordable housing crisis, the federal government needs to be involved. The scope of the problem is simply too large for states and localities to tackle. Imaging and designing a federal initiative will take policymakers who can think big, while learning from the mistakes of the post-WWII housing projects. Crucially, they should follow the lead of local housing activists who see housing as a right, not a commodity."

Access to affordable and appropriate housing decreases the likelihood that families and individuals will fall into or remain in poverty. Additionally, the availability of affordable housing is vital to accommodate the growing numbers our city is seeing. Rezoning would streamline and simplify the process of building different types of housing and reduce timelines for permit approvals in areas with already established transit and service infrastructure. Vibrant Communities Calgary’s staff are not zoning experts, but we know that affordable and diverse housing options are necessary for a vibrant city. We also hear stories of the struggles people are having with rental increases and the limited supply of rental options. We strongly believe rezoning is an important element in building the homes we need, and we urge Council to vote yes on this proposal. Read the rest of the letter we submitted to Calgary's Mayor and Council on March 13, 2024 in support of a proposal for citywide rezoning to a base residential district. https://lnkd.in/gtsa3z-M

Let's talk about the benefits of citywide rezoning 🏚: 1. Homes for Calgarians. Right now, 115,000 Calgarians are at extreme risk of homelessness due to the housing crisis. These are our neighbours, families, and co-workers being impacted by the housing crisis. 2. With increased density, we can increase access to services and infrastructure. You can get those potholes fixed and split the bill with more neighbours. 3. Revitalizing communities with more neighbours attracts new businesses, improves access to amenities and transit, and fosters a sense of belonging for all residents. As a city, we need to streamline the process of building different types of housing through rezoning. Calgarians need homes NOW. #yyc #zoning #housingcrisis #density

Most people are in favor of affordable housing, yet many shift their attitudes when affordable housing developments are proposed in their neighborhoods. Why? As researchers from Stanford found, the answer unfortunately lies in unconscious racist and classist biases. "A lot of times, arguing over the buildings is used as a more socially acceptable way to protest affordable housing projects. We're going to be dealing with the effects of racism in our projects and we need to be able to talk about that and address it." #AffordableHousing #HousingPolicy #Housing

"Since 2016, the #California Legislature has passed dozens of bills that remove regulatory barriers to #housing production. And since 2016, overall housing production has increased only modestly, according to permitting data from the state Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). When ADUs are subtracted from the mix, permitting activity has more or less flatlined." "At a certain point, all these special interest handouts end up eating up the value of whatever regulatory relief state law offers. When higher construction and financing costs are already putting serious headwinds on construction, these handouts are proving particularly fatal to new #development ." https://lnkd.in/gjb-WHak
