Volunteers are an important piece of nonprofit success, but sometimes hiring an employee is the better choice. Here's a quick guide to help you decide: 📌 Short-term Projects: Volunteers are a great option for events, fundraisers, seasonal campaigns, and other temporary tasks. 📌 Specialized Skills: If a task requires specific expertise (like legal advice, IT support, or grant writing), consider hiring a professional. Employees bring consistency and accountability. 📌 High Responsibility Roles: Positions involving sensitive information, leadership responsibilities, or significant decision-making should be filled by employees as they can be held accountable to your standards and policies. Ready to build the dream team? Start by evaluating your needs and aligning them with the right people for the job! #thepodvocateproject #podvocateprojectyyc #charitablegiving #marketingtips #yycgiving

I've worked in fundraising communications for 13 years - this article makes some excellent points. Instead of using fear or urgency-based language, the author wants us to communicate in ways that respect everyone's humanity and build real connections. Neumark suggests training in anti-racism and using inclusive strategies to create lasting social change. Overall, her message is about making fundraising more genuine and effective by focusing on values that bring communities together. Great read!

Today's take: Why Nonprofits and Social Impact Companies Can't Afford to Ignore PR If you want to grow your organization and fulfill your mission, PR is not a luxury—it's a necessity. Yet, many nonprofits and social impact companies shy away from it or put it on the back burner. That can be a costly mistake. Here are a few of the consequences of not doing PR: 😩 Reduced visibility: Potential supporters may never learn about your organization without PR. 😩 Decreased funding: Fewer PR efforts mean missed opportunities for attracting donors and customers. 😩 Limited influence: Effective PR amplifies your voice in policy and advocacy. Without it, your influence wanes. 😩 Weaker Relationships: PR builds strong stakeholder relationships vital for long-term support. 😩 Stagnant growth: Expanding your reach and impact becomes an uphill battle without PR. Investing in PR isn't just about promotion—it's about ensuring your mission reaches and resonates with those who can help you make a difference. I realize many organizations don't have PR in their budgets. However, if that's the case for you, can you really afford not to do PR? - - - - - - - - - - 👋 Hi, I'm Rhiannon. I help purpose-driven organizations (nonprofit and do-good companies) generate consistent media coverage and thought leadership opportunities to increase awareness, influence, and impact. At some point, organizations that are growing and expanding—especially nonprofits—have to decide whether communications and marketing is a service department or a *strategic and essential organizational function.* I'm indebted to Julie Masson for this tidbit. I've seen this borne out in nonprofit after nonprofit. When an organization gets big enough to think about hiring a #comms director or similar role, they either decide to put someone in an office to "do marketing," OR they hire someone to be a strategic partner with them in how their organization thinks, acts, and communicates. The way this decision goes tends to determine the trajectory of how the organization approaches comms and marketing going forward. Rinse and repeat.
