Song titles are getting later and later in the lyrics of popular songs. Many now don't appear until half way or more through the song, when it was common to have titles in the first line of a song back in the day. I find this stuff amazing, but there's no real explanation of why in this study of song lyrics from the 50s until now. I guess in simpler times you had to make your song title hit early and be memorable, because people only heard it on the radio (and later TV) and had to remember the name to find or ask for it in a record shop. There weren't as many second chances back then. These days songs are everywhere, you can shazam them, you can find them on social media and you can search out all their lyrics online from a snippet you heard, so artists can be as allusive as they want with the title. In fact, there has been an increase in songs which don't have the title in the lyrics at all (looking at you New Order) https://lnkd.in/eJiPZCDg #music #songs #musicindustry #spotify #shazam #records #pop

Punk rock journalist at Substack and soon-to-be-published author, formerly with Alternative Press and The Austin Chronicle.
AT THE SUBSTACK In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the very first Ramones gig at CBGB, a restack of our Parade Of Great Guitarists entry on Johnny Ramone: “Two barre chord positions, transposed up and down the neck. Contrary to popular belief, Johnny did not play power chords. Those are only two notes – the first and the fifth. Instead, he spent the Ramones’ entire career hitting full-on six string barre chords, through a dimed Marshall. The resultant barrage of distorted overtones created this overloaded frequency spectrum that contributed to the sonic fullness of the Ramones. Then there’s the matter of his attack: Johnny Ramone did not strum. He downstroked rapid fire eighth notes, picked down-down-down, reportedly in the manner of Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin’s protopunk raver ‘Communication Breakdown.’ And there were full-on rests and unique phrasing to the ramalama. This is what eludes many seeking to pull on Johnny’s well-worn Keds.” All this and more at The Tim “Napalm” Stegall Substack, where we get up on the downstroke every day. #timstegall #timnapalmstegall #timnapalmstegallsubstack #punkjournalism #paradeofgreatguitarists #johnnyramone #ramones #barrechords #downstrokes #mosriteventuresII #marshallamps #rhythmguitarisgod #theroadmaptothepresent #waytoomanyhashtagsforthisspace #isuregettiredoftypingthisshit #doyouevenreadthesethings #itdbefunnyifyoudid #thankyou #punkrock #punk #subscribe #fivedollarsmonthly #fiftydollarsannually #twentypercentoffspecial #upgradeyourfreesubscription #bestwaytosupport

"Like a Rolling Stone," by Bob Dylan Seth Rogovoy on the website Forward explains why this song, released as a single on July 20, is a creative masterpiece: "It begins with the quick snap of a snare drum — a kind of shot heard round the world — followed immediately by the thump of a kick drum before the seven-piece rock band explodes with the theme that would propel the hit single “Like a Rolling Stone” toward the top of the pop charts and into the cultural stratosphere, where, after changing the notion of what a pop song could be and influencing a thousand artists to follow, the rock poet Bob Dylan would ultimately garner a Nobel Prize for literature. ... ... “'Like a Rolling Stone' was transformational, a musical and cultural phenomenon that changed everything, even inspiring the name of [Rolling Stone] magazine. Going back and listening again (and again and again) to “Like a Rolling Stone” proves to be a religious experience. The record’s power — and it is as powerful today as it was upon its release in July 1965 — is unassailable. It reminds one of how at its best rock music can equally pack an emotional and intellectual impact; indeed, five-and-a-half decades after its initial release and after hearing it hundreds if not thousands of times, live and on record, it still reduces me to tears." Creativity happens every day. If you are scrounging your next meal, maybe the answer for your life is to act creatively to find your direction home. Mj #music #mondays Sometimes it’s okay not to mention #cannabis specifically when appealing to the broader #cannabisculture There are those artists that smoked, partied but never went too far in-depth with discussing cannabis use itself. Bob Fylan is a great example of this. Does he smoke pot? We know he does, and while very few songs make mention of it directly, he has been one of the artists that stood in unity with the hippies fighting against #war.. fighting for free #love and #peace, man… Songs like ‘Times are A Changing’ or even ‘Masters of War’ show the spirit of defiance against the American military industrial complex, while songs like ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’ or ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ capture that more creative out-there vibe that he was pioneering at the time with New Folk. When I think currently about how to tie this into a brief outlook on the #Canadian #cannabisindustry the song that seems fitting is ‘Don’t Think Twice it’s Alright’ Written by Hob Dylan in 1962, this guitar picked track was released on the album The Freewheelin Bob Dylan.. an album I believe I’ve posted about before on a previous music Monday. That slow walking away moment from the hulk, leaving a long and arduous adventure, toxic relationships and and endless cycle of negativity is an ideal I would like to see in this space. For the people that care about the plant as advocates, or even fanatics, I see those true believers in the future of the industry walking down a dirt road, baluchamp toed and slung over the shoulder.. just walking away. Throughout the last ten years of cannabis culture for me, I love watched a lot of people just walk away.. and I’ve had to walk on a number of endeavours. So, maybe we can call this a love ballad from the Butter Baron to those Canadian provincial boards.. where himself would never launch my product line. While the Baron walks off down the dirt road he wishes a consolation to those he left behind: Don’t think twice, it’s alright. .. or.. maybe it’s just a good tune. https://lnkd.in/eQWAabVg
