This is devastating news. Susan Wojcicki was many things to many people. She was a mentor, a tireless supporter of women in the workplace (the first Googler to take maternity leave!), a leader, a philanthropist. To me, she was the most engaged and committed stakeholder I've ever had, and a true patron of security innovation. Days after the shooting at YouTube Headquarters in 2018, in a conference room in San Bruno, she gave us a clear mission: make sure every one of my employees feels safe. That meant a lot of personnel support, physical security, and training. But most of all, given how and why the shooting happened, it meant delivering threat management at the scale of a global platform with 2 billion users. Over the coming years, we went from a sketch on a whiteboard to an industry-leading scaled threat management program. At her request, we briefed Susan weekly on our progress, for years. I grimaced at the task of presenting case studies, so many of which involved vile and, frankly, terrifying threats to Susan and her family. She never shied away, and never wavered in her support. The constant refrain was: "Are you getting everything you need to keep us safe?" And we did. We've made enormous progress, but none of it would have been possible without her engagement and, critically, her understanding of the value the company gets from every dollar invested in our program. Susan lived an amazing life, and her impact goes well beyond my small corner of the security universe. But my time with her taught me a lot of lessons about leadership and commitment, and what it takes to deliver real change. She will be missed. https://lnkd.in/eaaCs6aK

It feels good to be back into a role where I can have a direct change and impact the overall trajectory of a companies overall roadmap of success when it comes to their technology and cybersecurity program. For me the last 12 years have been great, I have learned so much, I have expanded my horizons in so many ways and have been able to provide for my family. However, for me all that left a lack of ownership that full time employment seems to fill like non other. Steve Jobs once said "I think that without owning something -- over an extended period of time, like a few years -- where you have the chance to take responsibility for your recommendations, where you have to see your recommendations through all action stages, and accumulate scar tissue for the mistakes, and pick yourself up off the ground and dust yourself off, you learn a fraction of what you can. Coming in and making recommendations and not owning the results, not owning the implications, (provides) a fraction of the value and a fraction of the opportunity to learn to be better. Without the experience of actually doing it, you never get three-dimensional." I am looking forward to leading impactful change for many years Montage Marketing Group as their new Information Systems Security Officer I will be able to finally scratch that itch of ownership and take full pride in helping to grow & modernize this amazing organization.

Episode 3: Consequences—all is not lost! After the two previous installments of this miniseries on the #marketing of #cybersecurity , we arrived at a rather grim picture of mutual misunderstanding and inflated egos battling for pride in a teacup. What does it hold for the French and European cybersecurity ecosystem? I will end on with the positive, but let us start where it hurts... 1. #scalability A shared statement is that Europe did not produce global champions. Although the lack of marketing is not the only factor there (*ahem* #funding *ahem* #publicexpenditure *ahem* #nobodyGotFiredForBuyingGartnerLeader *ahem*), the lack of marketing in cyber, both in terms of strategic assessment of markets and of operational market conquest stifles the emergence of truly global players. To quote a senior product marketing: "When [the CMO] spends their time choosing the flavor of gummy bears for a trade show instead of updating strategic insights with [the CEO] and fostering key partnerships with [the CRO], no wonder we're being eaten live by the yankees" (adapted & names redacted). 2. #visionaryleadership Vision is not something people are born with. It is to be nurtured, updated, implemented. In France especially, it is too often disregarded as a management gimmick or investor candybar in a slide deck. Yet when leaders have nobody to turn to but ever-acquiescing sycophants, it is natural that they start believing that they are self-sufficient and that their 'vision' (usually just Revenue targets in disguise) is great. And without an actual vision providing guidance, companies just cannot outgrow their natural boundaries (usually national). The bad ones falter while the good ones get acquired by In-Q-Tel-owned companies ;-) 3. #credibilitymatters The last point that I'll mention is a positive consequence: French companies are quite universally perceived as more credible than more marketing-savvy places of origin. The constant merry-go-round of hero experts serves at least this purpose: the public expression of (most) European companies is usually valued. Whenever a company tries to orbit closer to efficient (commercial) messaging, they are usually scolded, both because they do so ham-handedly, and because of this expertise bias downgrading everything that does not come from an expert. This credibility could be a very powerful asset in international development, provided that it can efficiently be aligned with commercial targets. Next up: what can be done? How can you help?

Reflecting on my journey of posting videos on LinkedIn for the past three years, I've been fortunate to glean invaluable lessons that resonate deeply with me: ✅ Listening to the Market: One of the most profound realizations has been understanding that the market itself is the best teacher. It whispers its desires, preferences, and even its discontent if we're willing to listen. The art lies not in imposing our ideas, but in humbly attuning ourselves to its rhythm. ✅ The Journey of Success: Success, I've learned, is not a fixed destination but a continuous process of construction. Along this road, we encounter potholes, obstacles, and detours that challenge our resolve. Yet, it's the commitment to moving forward, even amidst setbacks, that ultimately leads us to our envisioned destination. ✅ Honoring Your Vision: Remaining steadfast in our vision, especially when it seems invisible to others, demands courage and unwavering belief. It's a reminder that sometimes, we must be the sole torchbearers of our dreams, trusting in their manifestation despite external skepticism. As I reflect on these lessons, I'm reminded of the humility and resilience essential to this journey.
