Last month I read the executive summary for The Buckland Review of Autism Employment, it is quite a depressing read for me. I am guessing many people won't have read the Buckland Review, I would be interested to hear from those who have and what your thoughts are on it, especially if you are based in Lincolnshire. For me it is personal as my autistic son is 21 and back in the summer he finished his degree in History at Lincoln University. Like many graduates he is finding it difficulty to find a job in Lincolnshire. But then when you look at the information in the Buckland Review for him as young autistic adult at present the chances of him getting a job don't look good. Information from the Buckland Review. Only 3 out of 10 autistic people of working age are in employment. The report defines employment as working at least 1 hour per week paid. Autistic graduates are twice as likely to be unemployed after 15 months as non-disabled graduates with only 36% finding full time work in this period. It also says that autistic graduates are most likely to be over qualified for the job they have, most likely to be on zero hours contract and least likely to be in a permanent role. We are trying to stay positive, he is working with a job coach who specialises in working with autistic people and has started doing some volunteer work. I would be interested to know if there are many autism friendly employers in Lincolnshire. We are also toying with the idea of my son becoming self-employed but don't know what support there is out there for neurodivergent individuals starting a business. Do you know of any people that are working on autism and employment in Lincolnshire, as I would love to connect with them. #BucklandReview #Autism #Lincolnshire

Getting a Job Toolkit In this toolkit, we’ll be focusing on the process of getting a job as well as discussing some of the obstacles to getting and keeping a job. Many autistic adults are in the crosshairs of trying to secure a job that they like and is also a good fit. Others may prefer to find some contract work or part-time hours to get out of the house. Another consideration are those who want a job but don’t want to lose their disability benefits. Everyone is in a different place with this topic, so we are focused on supporting folks who would like some more information but don't know where to start. Access it here: https://lnkd.in/epb_psXx

This is really sad to read but as a neurodivergent person it is not surprising, alas! However, it reminds me of the importance both of Eleanor's work (see below) and the research project team I'm about to join at the DCU School of Inclusive and Special Education which will work towards making workplaces more neuro-affirmative. Many workers with conditions such as ADHD or autism would rather quit their jobs then challenge workplace barriers, coordinator of a new course at University College Cork warned. These conditions and others including learning disabilities are often grouped together as neurodivergence, meaning they see the world differently to many other people do. Programme coordinator with Adult and Continuing Education at UCC Eleanore McSherry said: “Many neurodivergent workers would quit rather than speak up on issues they face” in relation to modern workplace cultures. https://lnkd.in/eMtim3KQ If interested and you’d like to do the course sign up here. https://lnkd.in/eFpQY88g BioPharmaChem Skillnet University College Cork Adult Continuing Education (ACE) at UCC #inclusion #diversity #neurodiversityintheworkplace #humanresources
