OUAGANET is dedicated to empowering villagers in rural communities by providing access to quality seeds, particularly for those who cannot afford them. These seeds enable families to cultivate small vegetable gardens, grow food for their own consumption, and eventually sell surplus produce to support and expand their gardening projects.
The accompanying photo shows villagers holding seed bags, each containing ten varieties of high-quality vegetable seeds, including leafy greens well-suited for tropical climates such as seeds for the USA Zone 10 and above.
This initiative is made possible through the generous seed donations from a partner organization in the U.S. While many of these seeds are adapted to tropical environments, they require specific care to ensure successful germination. Crops like eggplant, carrots, peppers, and cabbage need starter kits, appropriate soil, and careful adherence to planting guidelines. As part of this program, villagers are trained in these techniques to grow vegetables effectively and sustainably.
Despite its potential, the initiative faces significant hurdles, including the cost of shipping seed boxes to Burkina Faso and obtaining essential supplies such as seed starter kits and soil. Overcoming these challenges is crucial to the program’s success and its ability to empower more communities.
