Research shows children are enjoying much less child-led, free play outdoors then their parents did as children.Children today are 62% less likely to play out than baby boomer grandparents. ⚠️Our education systems were designed in ways now understood to go against the grain of how children develop. As a proud Canadian institution, we honor and reflect on the profound impacts of residential schools on Indigenous communities. This day is a time for all of us to listen, learn, and commit to meaningful action towards reconciliation. Here are a few ways you can support and be involved: 1. Educate Yourself: Take time to read about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools. Resources such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and Indigenous literature are a great starting point. 2. Attend Local Events: Many communities are hosting events today. Check out local gatherings, discussions, or ceremonies and participate respectfully. 3. Support Indigenous Art and Culture: Engage with and promote Indigenous artists, authors, and creators. Their work reflects the richness and resilience of their cultures. 4. Donate: Consider contributing to organizations that support Indigenous communities and initiatives, such as those focused on education, health, and cultural preservation. 5. Engage in Dialogue: Open conversations with friends, family, and colleagues about reconciliation and what it means to you. Use this day as an opportunity to deepen your understanding and commitment. How organized was the traditional African society! A family for every and all children! It was an individual and collective responsibility for community members to raise happy, responsible, well nurtured and empowered children! How do we go back? Is there something we can do? It is all a new generation however we are talking of the same human beings! The society used to have a way of solving all their challenges be it at family or community level. There was always a shoulder to lean on.... We need to trace where the rain started beating us and we recollect ourselves. Children are our present and future! We need a collective effort. Is it documenting the learning, sharing lessons, bringing back our elders and involve them....how do we connect this with the youth and young parents?
