The growing down approach is something I’ve been strongly considering for our nonprofit, Childhelp® Ideas like a “playful ball pit to let your inner child out to play” has been buzzing around in my mind for the past few months, and others too. What do you think? Should we explore more growing down playful engagements in the coming year?

Do brands need to be more playful? We are seeing more and more experiences that leverage what I call ‘Growing Down’. It’s a direct response to what we’re sold in our adolescent years as ‘adulthood’. All I heard as a teenager was ‘Grow Up’ but we now live in a time where we’re actually questioning what that means and frankly being an adult is not all it’s cracked up to be. The rise of play-driven experiences is testament to a change towards a more playful and creatively explorative adult life and given that over 33% of Gen Z’s show symptoms of a mental health disorder perhaps this shift is for the better. So it begs the question, given ‘experience design’ on the whole is moving in this direction, should brands start to explore what ‘Growing Down’ looks like to them? What are your thoughts on this subject? Below: Nike Play Research Lab To coincide with the global ‘Play New’ campaign, Nike invited all athletes to see Nike Innovation through a new lens: Kid Vision. The Nike Play Research Lab (N.P.R.L.) was launched at Nike’s House of Innovation with a takeover dedicated to empowering and inspiring kids to move. N.P.R.L. put kids in the control seat to Innovate, Play and Create together.
